Nvidia’s latest frontier market is a small country in the South Caucasus: Armenia’s Firebird “AI factory” is scaling toward 300 megawatts and 70,000 Nvidia chips, a data-center buildout Bloomberg reports began operating in Hrazdan in August — with the U.S. export licenses behind it reportedly used as diplomatic leverage in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process.

    What happened

    • Firebird, a San Francisco-based AI cloud firm with Armenian-American founders, opened its data center in Hrazdan, Armenia, in August, with a ribbon-cutting attended by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and executives from Nvidia and Dell.
    • The target: roughly 300 megawatts of capacity and more than 70,000 advanced Nvidia processors — Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin generations — by the end of next year, per Bloomberg reporting.
    • About one-fifth of the compute is reserved for Armenian research, government agencies and startups; the rest goes to international clients, including U.S. AI firms such as Perplexity.
    • The export licenses flowed from a U.S.-Armenia AI and Semiconductor Innovation Partnership memorandum signed by Trump and Pashinyan in August 2025. The Wall Street Journal reported the promise of Nvidia chip access was used as an inducement to help clinch the preliminary Armenia-Azerbaijan peace framework.

    Why it matters

For Nvidia, it is another demand signal: AI compute capacity is being built almost everywhere export licenses allow, reinforcing that GPU demand still outruns supply. It also shows Washington treating Nvidia allocations as geopolitical currency — a reminder that export policy, not just silicon, decides who gets compute.

For investors, Firebird is a template: “AI factory” projects in smaller countries open new addressable markets for Nvidia’s data-center business and its partner ecosystem, including Dell. But note the gap between ribbon-cutting and reality: the first phase is reportedly around 6,000 Blackwell GPUs and 18 megawatts, so the 300MW figure is the expansion plan, not installed capacity.

    What to watch

    • Whether the expansion phases stay on schedule and on budget — the total build is estimated at upward of $5 billion.
    • U.S. export-license policy: how Washington balances chip diplomacy with tight controls on China, where Nvidia access remains restricted.
    • Client uptake: whether names like Perplexity validate Armenia as a regional compute hub, or it stays a diplomatic showcase.

Do you think the U.S. should be using Nvidia chip access as a bargaining chip in peace talks — or should chip exports stay purely commercial?
