Thursday’s U.S. session ended very differently than it started. The Nasdaq opened down 1.4% and chip stocks crashed to a seventh straight loss — then money rotated out of leveraged AI names into health care, consumer stocks and bonds, sending the Dow up more than 550 points while the 10-year yield plunged.

The theme is a split market: the AI trade is being repriced for credit risk, while the rest of the market quietly rallies. Here’s what changed since this morning’s edition.

    1. The Great Rotation: Dow Up 556 Points as Money Flees Tech

The Dow surged 556 points, or 1.08%, to close near 52,178. The S&P 500 added 0.33% and the Nasdaq erased a 1.4% opening plunge to finish 0.08% higher. The engine was rotation: health care led the S&P, with consumer discretionary and materials close behind, while tech lagged badly. Nike jumped 5.2% to lead the Dow, followed by Home Depot and Salesforce with gains above 4%. Advancers beat decliners 3-to-1 on the NYSE.

Bonds rallied hard as the same AI credit fears that crushed chips pushed investors toward safety. The 10-year Treasury yield plunged 10 basis points to 5.09%, extending its pullback from a recent 5.36% peak.

    • Dow +556 (+1.08%); S&P 500 +0.33%; Nasdaq +0.08% after -1.4% intraday
    • 10-yr yield -10 bps to 5.09%; breadth 3:1 positive on NYSE
    • Nike +5.2%; Home Depot and Salesforce each +4%+

    2. AI Credit Crunch Deepens: $1.64 Trillion Erased in Six Sessions

Semiconductors extended their rout even as the broader market recovered. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell for a seventh straight day, down as much as 4.4% intraday before paring to a 0.88% loss. Roughly $1.64 trillion in chip-sector market value has now been erased across six sessions.

The trigger is financing, not demand — TSMC just posted a record quarter. Yields on some CoreWeave bonds have approached 15%, a level usually associated with distress, raising doubts about who funds the next wave of data-center builds. Nvidia fell over 2% on Thursday, AMD dropped about 4%, Dell tumbled 8% to trigger a technical sell signal, and Vicor plunged nearly 12%. The iShares Semiconductor ETF is heading toward an eighth straight daily decline, potentially its longest streak in about 11 years.

Saxo Bank’s Charu Chanana pushed back, saying there is “insufficient evidence of a systemic AI credit crisis.” Still, with the chips index down roughly 12% from its peak, the AI trade is now being graded on balance sheets, not order books.

    • Semi index: 7th straight loss (-4.4% intraday); $1.64T gone in 6 sessions
    • CoreWeave yields near 15%; Dell -8%, Vicor -12%, Semtech -9%
    • SOXX toward 8th straight daily loss (~11-year record)

    3. Warsh Faces Revolt From Within Ahead of Tonight’s Speech

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s push for a “quieter” central bank is meeting organized resistance from his own colleagues, Reuters reported Thursday. More than 40 public appearances by nearly all of Warsh’s fellow policymakers have convinced traders to scale back the rate-hike bets that mounted after September’s rate increase.

Tonight is Warsh’s last word before the blackout. He speaks with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Bangkok at 11:30 p.m. ET, his final scheduled remarks before the quiet period begins October 17 ahead of the October 27-28 FOMC meeting. Futures price roughly a 29% chance of an October hike (down from a spike near 50% after Wednesday’s CPI) and about an 88% chance of a hike by December.

Citi’s Andrew Hollenhorst warned Warsh is “at risk of sounding hawkish” even if he says little — merely stressing that inflation is above target would land as hawkish right now.

    • Warsh-Georgieva chat 11:30 p.m. ET — last word before Oct 17 blackout
    • Oct hike odds ~29% (from ~47% post-CPI); December hike ~88% (CME)
    • Reuters: 40+ Fed official appearances talked traders off peak hike bets

    4. Oil Rebounds: WTI Jumps ~3% as IEA Reports Higher Output

Crude reversed course Thursday. After slipping in early trading on U.S. sanctions-relief talk, West Texas Intermediate surged nearly 3% to about $97.70 a barrel, with Brent holding near $104. The rebound followed the Houthi attack on Saudi Aramco’s headquarters and fresh vessel strikes near the Strait of Hormuz.

The supply picture got two offsetting data points: the IEA said Russia’s crude production rose 65,000 barrels per day in September to 8.43 million bpd (still 870,000 below a year ago), while Gulf exporters lifted shipments by 4.4 million bpd to roughly 75% of pre-war levels. The API reported an 11.1 million-barrel U.S. crude draw. Washington is still weighing easing sanctions on shadow-fleet tankers to cut record freight rates.

    • WTI +~3% to ~$97.70; Brent ~$104 amid Hormuz attacks and Aramco strike
    • IEA: Russia +65K bpd to 8.43M bpd; Gulf exports +4.4M bpd to ~75% of pre-war
    • API: 11.1M-barrel U.S. draw; U.S. weighing shadow-fleet sanctions relief

    5. Tesla’s Roadster Returns Tonight After Nine Years

Tesla livestreams the next-generation Roadster reveal at 7:55 p.m. Central tonight from an outdoor venue near Waco, Texas — nearly nine years after Musk unveiled the prototype in November 2017. The event was delayed two weeks from October 1 due to severe weather.

Musk calls it a candidate for the “greatest product demo of all time,” and has claimed the car will hit 0-60 mph in under one second using SpaceX cold-gas thrusters. He has also been candid that it is “not sure it moves the needle massively from a revenue standpoint.” No price, range, or delivery date is officially confirmed, with production guided for 2027 or 2028 — this is a halo event, not an earnings catalyst.

    • Roadster livestream 7:55 p.m. CT, Waco TX; 9 years after 2017 prototype
    • Sub-1-sec 0-60 claim (SpaceX thrusters); production guided 2027-28
    • No confirmed price/range/delivery; rescheduled from Oct 1 (weather)

    6. Bitcoin Rebounds Toward $82,300 as Risk Appetite Returns

Crypto followed the afternoon risk-on shift. Bitcoin recovered to near $82,300 after overnight lows near $80,000 — our market data board shows BTC at $82,294 (+0.77%), Ethereum at $2,457 (+1.64%), XRP at $1.34 and Solana at $105.89.

The overnight story was darker: a second hot inflation print triggered nearly $1 billion in leveraged crypto liquidations, and Ether briefly slid below $2,370. But as Treasury yields sank and stocks rotated higher, crypto tracked the recovery. With the October 27-28 FOMC ahead, macro remains the driver.

    • BTC ~$82,300 (from ~$80,000 overnight); ETH $2,457; XRP $1.34; SOL $105.89
    • Overnight: ~$1B in liquidations on hot PPI; sentiment back toward neutral

    What to Watch

    • Tesla Roadster reveal 7:55 p.m. CT tonight
    • October 27-28 FOMC decision; PCE inflation October 29
    • Whether the AI credit selloff bleeds into Friday or the rotation holds
