European natural gas prices are surging again as the U.S.-Iran stalemate over the Strait of Hormuz shows no sign of resolving — and winter heating season is closing in.
What happened
Benchmark Dutch TTF front-month futures rose more than 2% in early Monday trading to €73.62 per megawatt-hour (about $83.76), according to OilPrice.com, rebounding from a roughly 9% slide last week. The Wall Street Journal put the move at 2.4%, to €73.63/MWh.
The trigger: President Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, reviving fears of a prolonged disruption to LNG flows through the world’s most important energy chokepoint. Brent crude is back above $100 and EU gas storage sits just below 71% full — versus more than 80% typical for this time of year. Germany, the bloc’s largest economy, is at only about 57%.
Why it matters
This is Europe’s margin of safety evaporating in real time. Most of Qatar’s LNG supply is still offline and subdued traffic through Hormuz has tightened the market for months, but the storage picture is what makes this more than a one-day price pop:
- 71% EU storage vs 80%+ normal — a historically thin buffer heading into winter
- €73.63/MWh TTF — up 2.4% in a single session on the stalemate news
- Norwegian pipeline flows are lower on seasonal maintenance, and Chinese LNG imports are rebounding — adding Asian competition for every available cargo
Higher energy costs feed directly into inflation just as markets price a 70%-plus chance of another Fed rate hike in October, which is why European gas now matters for U.S. rate-sensitive sectors too.
What to watch
Mediators are reportedly aiming to hold separate talks with the U.S. and Iran early this week on an amended version of Tehran’s seven-day ceasefire proposal — any progress could unwind this rally fast. Also watch November TTF futures, EU storage fill data from Gas Infrastructure Europe, and whether Qatar’s offline LNG volumes return.
