NIO just struck one of China’s most significant EV infrastructure deals of the year, selling a large stake in its battery-swapping business to Geely.
What happened
Announced Monday, a Geely Holding subsidiary will take a 30% stake in NIO Power – NIO’s battery-swapping and charging unit – in a deal valuing the business at about 16 billion yuan ($2.4 billion), per Reuters and Bloomberg. Geely pays 640 million yuan ($95 million) in cash and contributes its own Yiyi commercial battery-swap business. NIO China keeps 63.6%, with existing investor Wuhan Guangchuang holding 6.4%. In a parallel move, NIO China takes a 10% stake in Geely’s Haohan Energy charging arm. The deal needs regulatory clearance. NIO’s US-listed shares rose about 2.2% in premarket trading, while its Hong Kong shares gained as much as 3.2%.
– $2.4B – post-money valuation of NIO Power
– 30% – Geely’s stake (can rise to 34% with another 640M yuan option)
– 640M yuan – Geely’s cash payment (~$95M)
– 63.6% – NIO China’s retained stake; Geely’s stake can fall to 20% if Yiyi misses operating milestonesWhy it matters
NIO’s swap network – over 4,000 stations – has long been its most distinctive asset but also its most expensive. Bringing in Geely validates the model and turns it from a NIO-only perk into an industry platform: Geely’s Cao Cao Mobility fleet will go fully battery-swap, and the two are in talks to extend the technology across Geely’s consumer models. At $2.4B, NIO Power is worth more than a quarter of NIO’s entire ~$9B market value – the market is now explicitly pricing the infrastructure business separately from the cars.
What to watch
Regulatory approval is the near-term gate. Then watch whether Geely’s consumer EVs actually adopt NIO’s swap standard – that would be the real proof that battery swapping is becoming an industry protocol rather than a one-company experiment. CATL’s 2.5 billion yuan investment in NIO Power last year already pointed this way.
