Citigroup and Coinbase have gone live with stablecoin payments infrastructure aimed at corporate clients, announcing the launch on Monday, September 28, 2026. The rollout builds on a partnership first formed in October 2025 — and it is a genuine milestone: bank-grade rails and public blockchain settlement paired at institutional scale for the first time.

    What happened

Corporate clients of Citi can now accept stablecoin payments through the bank’s Spring by Citi platform. Coinbase supplies the blockchain rails, converting the tokens into fiat automatically for settlement — Citi remains the bank of record. Separately, Coinbase will use Citi’s Virtual Account Wallet to power its Virtual Accounts: businesses deposit dollars via ACH, wire, or real-time payments, and the funds are automatically converted into USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle. The programs launch first in the United States, so merchants never hold or manage digital assets.

    Key figures:

    • 3.75% annual reward rate currently attached to USDC balances on Coinbase — paid by Coinbase as a platform incentive, not by Circle as the issuer
    • October 2025: when the original Citi–Coinbase collaboration on fiat-to-crypto payment infrastructure was announced
    • $195.11: where COIN shares began Monday’s session, between their 50-day average ($170.99) and 52-week high ($402.16)

    Why it matters

The settlement design removes the biggest operational objection corporate treasurers had: the stablecoin exists only inside the payment, then converts to fiat before reaching the company’s banking environment.

The timing also exposes a live regulatory gap. The GENIUS Act, signed in July 2025, bars stablecoin issuers from paying yield directly to holders — but leaves room for exchange affiliates to offer platform incentives. Banks lobbied to close that gap in the CLARITY Act, which stalled in the Senate earlier this month on a 49–50 vote. Coinbase’s 3.75% sits squarely in that open window, and Citi’s participation effectively stamps bank-grade approval on the model.

    • Whether Citi expands beyond the U.S. — its token services are also rolling out in Japan and the UAE
    • Any fresh bill language targeting the yield loophole, which would hit Coinbase’s 3.75% incentive model directly
    • Adoption disclosures from early corporate clients — watch for transaction volume numbers

Would you trust stablecoin payments through your bank, or does crypto need to stay outside the banking system to be worth using?
