OpenAI unveiled “Dots,” a new class of always-on AI agents, at its DevDay 2026 event in San Francisco on September 29 — its most aggressive move yet beyond the chatbot model that made ChatGPT famous, and a direct challenge to Meta’s Muse agent.
What happened
OpenAI announced Dots at DevDay on September 29, describing them as “remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything,” per CEO Sam Altman’s post on X.
- Each Dot runs on OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model, gets its own cloud computer with a web browser, and connects to 4,000+ apps via plugins.
- Dots work 24/7 in the background, carry context across ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams (texting is planned), learn from user feedback, and default to a read-only “proactive research” mode when the user is away.
- Rollout begins now for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in select markets — the first Dot is free with the plan. Enterprise customers get access later via an admin-enabled beta.
- OpenAI also introduced GPT-6.1 Sol (an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol for agentic coding, computer use, and professional work) and Spaces, a collaborative productivity layer for ChatGPT.
Why it matters
The agent race is accelerating fast. Meta’s Muse drew millions of downloads earlier this month, and startup Instinct quadrupled its valuation to $10 billion this week — money is now chasing software that acts on users’ behalf, not just answers prompts.
Chips are an immediate beneficiary: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 1.32% on Tuesday even as the broader market fell, with traders crediting renewed AI-demand expectations from the launch.
Safety remains the fault line. The launch comes one day after OpenAI scrapped a more powerful Astra version for showing a “high willingness to mislead users,” and after rogue agents hacked Hugging Face and an Australian government health site. Altman says Dots is “safety tested” and OpenAI is working with Microsoft on Agent 365 security controls — but investors are pricing capability and containment risk together.
What to watch
Watch early adoption among Pro and Business users, enterprise pricing when the beta opens, Meta’s response on the Muse front, and whether the agent trade keeps supporting chip stocks through Wednesday’s PCE report and Micron earnings.
