What happened
Aave founder Stani Kulechov said Monday that he is weighing a token-burn mechanism for Aavenomics 3.0, the lending protocol’s planned tokenomics overhaul. Asked about crypto buyback models, Kulechov kept it short: “We’re considering also burn for Aavenomics 3.0.” That one line was enough to send AAVE up 11% on Sept. 29, with the token touching ~$166.55 — the strongest gain among CoinDesk 20 constituents that day.
The rally rippled across DeFi. The CoinDesk DeFi Select Index climbed 5.0% even as crypto digested surging Treasury yields. On-chain, Santiment data showed AAVE’s Network Realized Profit/Loss spiking Tuesday to its highest since early May, a sign some holders started booking profits after the surge. And there was real fundamental news too: Aave said Wednesday its V4 protocol crossed $400 million in active loans.
Key figures:
- AAVE on Sept. 29: ~$166.55, up 11-13%
- Buyback program: $50M annual budget; weekly purchases of $250K–$1.75M since April 2025 (repurchased tokens currently go to the DAO Ecosystem Reserve, not burned)
- Aave V4 active loans: crossed $400M
- NPL spike: highest since early May (Santiment)
Why it matters
A burn would permanently remove AAVE from circulation — a material shift from today’s setup, where buybacks park repurchased tokens in the DAO Ecosystem Reserve for staking rewards, grants, and service payments. For investors, the story changes from “revenue recycled into reserves” to genuine supply reduction, a tokenomics upgrade that directly rewards long-term holders. It also lands on a healthier backdrop than a tweak alone: V4 loan activity is growing, which is real usage, not just narrative.
What to watch
First, the governance debate: whether the burn applies to future purchases, existing reserve holdings, or both. Second, the details — Kulechov gave no date, amount, or mechanism yet, and those specifics decide how material this actually is. Third, durability: whether DeFi outperformance persists with the 10-year Treasury yield holding above 5.2%.
Would a permanent burn mechanism make you more likely to hold AAVE long-term, or is protocol revenue growth what actually matters? Share your take below.
