The AI infrastructure trade just found a new winner in an unlikely place: Akamai Technologies (AKAM), the legacy content-delivery network, announced a $11.6 billion, seven-year agreement with Anthropic to provide cloud infrastructure and software. The market’s reaction was emphatic — Akamai shares surged more than 20% in extended trading, a sharp reversal for a stock that had spent Thursday’s session trading below both its 200-day and 50-day lines.
This is what the “picks and shovels” phase of the AI buildout looks like. A leading AI lab signing a hyperscale-scale, multi-year infrastructure contract with a company that started out as a CDN shows that the bottleneck investors are pricing in is capacity, not just chips. Anthropic needs somewhere to run its models at scale, and it’s paying premium prices to lock that capacity down for seven years. Fellow cloud provider Fastly catching a modest bid in overnight trading reinforces the read-through: the deal re-prices the whole edge-cloud corner of the market.
The backdrop makes the move more notable. Thursday’s session was weighed down by rising Treasury yields — the 10-year at 5.21% — and higher oil prices, which typically punish growth and long-duration assets. Yet AI-infrastructure names drew aggressive after-hours buying. That’s selective risk appetite, not broad euphoria: the market is distinguishing between real contracted revenue and AI narrative alone.
For Akamai, this is a genuine inflection — a chance to re-rate from a slow-growth CDN into an AI infrastructure play. For the broader trade, the message is that the AI capex wave is broadening beyond the usual GPU names and into everyone who owns pipes, racks, and bandwidth.
