What happened
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Wednesday there are “strong indications” Iran was behind the foiled attack on RAF Fairford last weekend, when five masked men were arrested next to the air base. “We will say more in due course, but we can confirm our belief that we believe Iran to have played a part,” Burnham told the BBC.
- RAF Fairford is used by the U.S. as a staging post for bombers striking Iran, and houses around a dozen heavy U.S. bombers
- U.S. officials were aware of an Iran-linked plot to attack the bomber aircraft and kill personnel; a branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps recruited UK nationals, per a U.S. official familiar with the intelligence
- The multi-step plot reportedly included a neighborhood diversion; the men had been under investigation
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier said a foreign actor was behind the botched attempt; U.S. officials consider Iran the most likely culprit
Why it matters
Using proxies to plot an attack on a UK military installation marks a significant escalation — Britain is not directly at war with Iran. Iran has targeted British bases abroad during the seven-month war, including Diego Garcia and Akrotiri in Cyprus, but a plot inside Britain is a new threshold.
It lands as U.S.-Iran diplomacy stalls over sequencing disputes on Iran’s latest proposal, sanctions keep tightening (the U.S. sanctioned more Iran-linked entities Tuesday), and the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported another vessel struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. Oil is already near wartime highs with Brent above $103.
