The October rate-hike threat unraveled this morning as markets finished digesting Friday’s soft payrolls print — traders now see only about a 20% chance of a Fed hike at the October 28 meeting, down from 71% a week ago. Monday’s tape is busy anyway: a $22.6B Schneider–PTC megadeal, a $5.8B logistics takeover, a fresh twist in Musk’s chip gambit, and oil hovering near $100 even as Gulf exports quietly recover.
Friday’s Jobs Miss Still Runs the Tape
The September employment report keeps doing the market’s work. Payrolls rose just 29,000 versus roughly 90,000 expected, unemployment ticked up to 4.2%, July and August gains were revised down by a combined 60,000, and wage growth cooled to 3.0% year over year.
- CME FedWatch: ~80–82% odds the Fed holds at the October 28 meeting, up from ~29% a week ago
- Friday’s reaction: Dow +0.49% to 51,177, S&P 500 +0.73% to 7,723, Nasdaq 100 to a record 30,808
- Monday: index futures dipped ~0.2% as the rally cooled; 10-year yield ~5.28%, gold ~$4,180
Why it matters: an imminent hike is off the table, but the December hike is still largely priced in and bond yields sit near multi-year highs — the bond market hasn’t surrendered. Fed Governor Waller speaks at the Istanbul Economic Forum this week; more Fedspeak will shape the December debate.
Schneider Electric Bets $22.6B on Industrial AI
Schneider Electric agreed Monday to buy U.S. industrial-software maker PTC in an all-cash deal at $205 per share — valuing PTC’s equity at $22.6 billion (enterprise value $23.7 billion), a 42.3% premium to Friday’s close. It is the largest acquisition in Schneider’s history, expected to close in Q3 2027 and financed with equity plus new debt.
- Follows Schneider’s $3.1B Cognite deal (June) and ~€1.35B Shelly bid (September)
- After closing, ~25% of Schneider’s revenue comes from software and services
- PTC jumped 35% in U.S. premarket; Schneider fell ~9% in Paris, wiping ~€15B off its market cap
Why it matters: this is industrial AI getting real money behind it — the data-center backbone (cooling, power, racks) extending upstream into product-design software. But investors are balking at the premium while software multiples sit under AI-disruption pressure. Schneider is betting scale beats timing.
Musk Confirms TSMC Talks for Terafab — Intel Slips
Elon Musk confirmed over the weekend that TSMC is in discussions to help run his Texas-based Terafab chip venture, jointly led by Tesla and SpaceX and unveiled in March with a target of one terawatt of annual compute capacity. Intel, which became Terafab’s first named partner in April, saw its shares fall 4% in premarket trade while TSMC rose ~1.5%.
Musk acknowledged TSMC’s chips would come “in addition to” Intel’s, but Oppenheimer floated a sharper structure: TSMC owning and running a fab that serves only Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Why it matters: xAI and Tesla compute demand dwarfs what existing partners can supply — Musk said flatly that current partners “couldn’t make enough.” For Intel, exclusivity was the prize; sharing the stage with TSMC turns a catalyst into competition.
Gulf Oil Flows Recover — But Tanker Attacks Resume
Middle East crude exports exceeded pre-war levels in four of the final seven days of September, Kpler data showed Monday, averaging 18.5 million barrels per day — versus an 18M pre-war average. Saudi’s restarted east-west pipeline and a shadow shuttle fleet (transponders off) now move ~40% of regional crude without touching the strait.
- Seven vessels attacked in the past week; UKMTO reported two tanker strikes over the weekend
- Iran’s parliament speaker reiterated Sunday: no reopening until Tehran’s seven conditions are met — ending the U.S. naval blockade, releasing Iranian assets
- A shuttle round trip costs $30–40 million ($15–20 per barrel before insurance)
Brent sits near $100 and WTI ~$90.40. Why it matters: the market is getting the supply resilience it priced in — yet paying a war premium anyway. If Iran’s attacks slow the shuttle system, the recovery reverses fast, and record diesel prices keep inflation pressure alive.
More Monday Deals: Cenovus–Athabasca, C.H. Robinson–RXO
Cenovus Energy agreed to acquire Athabasca Oil in a cash-and-stock deal at an implied enterprise value of C$5.7 billion (~$4.0B). Separately, C.H. Robinson will buy freight firm RXO for an implied $5.8 billion in a stock-and-cash deal expected to close in the first half of 2027 — RXO jumped 23%, C.H. Robinson dropped 10%. Why it matters: consolidation across oil and logistics in the same morning, with operators betting scale beats uncertainty.

Discussion: Schneider is paying a 42% premium for PTC while its own shares drop 9% — is this bold industrial-AI positioning, or a cycle-top premium? What’s your take on the timing?
