U.S. consumer sentiment just fell to a four-month low — and inflation expectations jumped again. Friday’s University of Michigan survey showed American consumers bracing for 4.6% inflation in the coming year, up from their 4% forecast a month earlier. Overall sentiment came in better than economists expected, but it was still the weakest reading in four months.

The timing mattered for markets. The report landed Friday morning and immediately undercut the day’s stock rally by pushing Treasury yields higher: the 10-year yield briefly jumped above 5.22%, near its highest level since 2007, before easing back to 5.17% as oil prices cooled. Brent crude dropped 2.8% to $97.44 a barrel on renewed hopes that a deal could fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to tankers, taking some pressure off yields and stocks. The S&P 500 added 0.4%, on track to break a three-day losing streak and finish its first winning week in three, pulling closer to the all-time high set last month. The Dow rose 438 points (0.9%) and the Nasdaq composite added 0.4%. Akamai led gainers with a 4.7% jump after announcing an $11.6 billion cloud agreement with Anthropic, while Costco added 2.7% on a stronger-than-expected quarterly profit.

Why it matters: expectations are the dangerous part. The AP noted that some consumers told the survey they plan to buy now to avoid higher prices later — behavior that can feed a vicious cycle of spending and price increases. Rising inflation expectations also strengthen the case for another Fed rate hike in October: the central bank just delivered its first hike in three years, officials have given no sign the tightening is over, and this report keeps the inflation narrative alive at exactly the wrong moment for doves.

What to watch: oil prices and Hormuz headlines into the weekend, next week’s Treasury auctions, and any fresh Fed commentary. With the 10-year yield near 5.2%, the bond market is doing some of the central bank’s tightening for it — and stocks will live or die by where yields go next.
