    What happened

Strategy (MSTR) proposed daily dividend accruals for its preferred securities — STRF, STRC, STRK and STRD — with payments to be made on the next business day, the company announced Friday. Chairman Michael Saylor said the proposed changes are designed to support “price stability, liquidity, and demand” for Strategy’s preferred securities. Separately, Strive CEO Matt Cole pushed back on the MSCI framework for classifying bitcoin treasury companies, arguing that bitcoin-based structured finance involves active management of capital, liquidity and risk rather than passive asset ownership. Strategy has previously challenged MSCI’s proposed treatment of companies with large amounts of “non-operating” assets, arguing its bitcoin business should qualify as an operating activity. Both stocks slid in midday trading Friday: MSTR fell nearly 2% and ASST edged 0.5% lower, tracking bitcoin’s 0.4% decline to around $83,400.

    Why it matters

Two storylines are converging here. First, Strategy is steadily turning its preferreds into income products — daily dividend accruals would make STRF, STRC, STRK and STRD behave more like money-market instruments than equity, potentially widening their investor base beyond bitcoin bulls. Second, the MSCI classification fight is existential for both companies: if index providers treat bitcoin treasury firms as passive funds rather than operating companies, the resulting index exclusion would force passive holders to sell and could permanently re-rate these stocks. Cole’s argument — that treasury management is an active operating business — is the industry’s core defense, and how MSCI ultimately rules will shape every corporate bitcoin treasury that follows.

    What to watch

Whether shareholders approve the daily dividend structure and how the preferreds price afterward; the next MSCI consultation milestone on digital-asset classification; and whether other treasury companies (Metaplanet, Semler Scientific) copy the daily-dividend model. Would you hold a bitcoin company’s preferred stock just for the daily dividend, or is the equity upside the whole point?
