Marvell Technology (MRVL) is handing investors a rare setup: a record quarter, a panicked sell-off, and a catalyst in three days. With the stock at $272 — still 17% below its 52-week high — Tuesday’s Investor Day could reset the market’s whole AI math on this name.
The Thesis
Marvell just posted its strongest quarter ever — $2.739 billion in revenue, up 37% year over year — and then watched the stock fall 13% because the biggest payoff from its Google partnership sits three years out. That impatience is the opportunity. With management set to unveil fresh long-term targets on October 6, buyers today are getting in ahead of the narrative reset, not after it.
Business Snapshot
Marvell designs the plumbing of the AI era: high-speed optical interconnects, data-center switches, and custom silicon for hyperscalers. Nearly 79% of revenue now comes from the data center segment.
The moat is straightforward. Hyperscalers need someone who can deliver custom AI chips and the networking to stitch them together at massive scale — and Marvell sits inside that design process years before revenue arrives. Nvidia’s $2 billion investment in the company this March is the strongest third-party validation of that position.

Financials: What the Numbers Say
Fiscal Q2 2027 (ended August 1, reported August 27) was a genuine blowout. Revenue hit a record $2.739 billion, up 36.6% year over year and $39 million above the midpoint of Marvell’s own guidance.
The engine is data center revenue: $2.17 billion, up 46% year over year and 18% sequentially. That segment is now 79% of sales, up from 74% a year ago — so the blended growth rate rises mechanically each quarter as mix shifts.
- Non-GAAP EPS: $0.94, up 40.3% year over year (consensus was $0.93); GAAP EPS $0.33
- Non-GAAP operating margin: 36.6%, up 180 basis points year over year
- Operating cash flow: $605.5 million; cash on hand: $3.93 billion
- Capital returns: $200 million in buybacks plus $53.9 million in dividends
The trend is acceleration, not plateauing. Management guided Q3 revenue to $3.15 billion — about 50% growth year over year — and raised fiscal 2027 revenue to about $12 billion (~45% growth) and fiscal 2028 to about $18 billion.
Chart & Technicals
The chart tells a clean recovery story. After the post-earnings “AI pacing” selloff, MRVL rebuilt a base and broke back above the $233–$238 zone — old resistance turning into support — on a 5–6% surge on well above-average volume in late September.
Price sits above the 50-day and 200-day moving averages in a stacked bullish alignment, roughly $216–$221 on the 50-day and around $155–$174 on the 200-day. Daily RSI read 52.65 at the last published reading — neutral-to-firm, leaving room to run without flashing overbought.
Key support $233–$238 (retest zone); then 50-day MA near $216–$220 Key resistance $260–$265; ~$270 (analyst target cluster); $280–$290 52-week high $329.88 — about 17% above Friday’s close The buying pressure shows up exactly where you want it: volume expanded on the breakout through resistance while MACD held a constructive posture above its signal line.
Valuation
At roughly $272, Marvell trades at about 39 times fiscal 2028 earnings estimates — about twice the S&P 500’s forward multiple of ~19. That’s a real premium, and the ~62x current-year forward multiple is not for the faint of heart.
But the price of growth is growth itself. Consensus sees current-year EPS around $4.21, up roughly 48%, with revenue compounding toward $18 billion by fiscal 2028. For a business whose data-center segment is growing 46–60% annually, a ~40x out-year multiple is arguably fair — the premium compresses quickly if targets hold.
The selloff already did the dirty work. The market de-rated the stock once on patience concerns; anyone buying now gets the same business at a cheaper entry with three catalysts lined up.
Catalysts & What to Watch
- Tuesday, October 6 — Investor Day (New York). Management is expected to raise long-term TAM guidance and could unveil 2030 targets including EPS of $15–$20 (per RBC’s expectations). Custom-silicon revenue north of $10 billion by fiscal 2029 — via the Google agreement — will be the centerpiece.
- Late November — Q3 FY2027 earnings. The bar is set at $3.15 billion in revenue; the custom-silicon ramp into the second half of FY2027 is the number to watch.
- 2028 product ramp: 1.6-terabit optical products scaling up and custom silicon expected to more than double in fiscal 2028.
Risks
The multiple is the obvious one. At ~62x current-year forward earnings, there is zero room for disappointment — any AI capex slowdown or guidance miss would be punished swiftly.
Second, the “AI pacing” problem is real. The market already sold the stock off once when it realized the biggest Google custom-silicon dollars arrive near 2029; if Tuesday’s targets don’t beat whispered expectations, that de-rating repeats.
Third, mix shift pressures margins. Custom chips carry lower gross margins — management guided Q3 adjusted gross margin to 57.5–58.5% versus 58.9% last quarter. Growth could come at the cost of margin compression.
Fourth, concentration. Data center is 79% of revenue; a hyperscaler capex pause would hit hard. And insider selling has exceeded buying 25-to-4 over the past year, including a 7,500-share sale by CEO Matt Murphy on September 15.
Bottom Line
This is the cleanest AI-infrastructure setup in large caps right now: a record quarter, an overdone selloff on timing fears, and a hard catalyst in three days. The valuation demands perfection, so position sizing matters — but at $272, the risk-reward into the October 6 Investor Day looks squarely positive for a 6–18 month horizon.
Would you buy Marvell ahead of Tuesday’s Investor Day, or wait to see what management guides for 2030?
