SOXL (Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares) is the most talked-about leveraged ETF of 2026, and its chart this year is genuinely historic. Here’s what’s actually going on, with numbers.
What it is: SOXL tracks the NYSE Semiconductor Index at 3x the DAILY return. Top holdings are the who’s who of US chips — Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, Micron, Intel — roughly the top 30 US-listed semiconductor names. Expense ratio 0.76%, beta around 5.7–5.9. This is a trading instrument, not an investment.
The 2026 ride, in numbers:
– 52-week range: $28.12 (Nov 2025) → $302.00 (June 22, 2026)
– First half of 2026: roughly +535% at the peak, one of the fastest momentum runs in ETF history, driven by AI chip demand persistently beating expectations
– Then: more than -60% drawdown from the June peak in about six weeks
– Today (Sept 24): trading around $141–146 — still about 52% below the high, but up ~41% over the last 5 days and +248% year-to-date
– 50-day moving average: ~$126. 200-day: ~$140. Price is wrestling with the 200-day right now.
– This morning it gapped down at the open ($138.47 vs $146.25 prior close) — a reminder of the daily volatility. The part most people misunderstand — daily leverage decay: 3x leverage does NOT mean 3x the annual return of semiconductors. The fund rebalances daily, so compounding cuts both ways. In a choppy market, the math quietly eats returns even if the index ends up flat or higher. The 60%+ post-June crash wasn’t a 60% crash in chip stocks — it was the index correcting while 3x daily compounding amplified every down day. This is the single most important thing to understand before touching SOXL.
The flow picture: even during the July–mid-August slide, SOXL pulled in massive retail inflows — Korean retail investors alone net-bought about $891 million in a single week (Aug 18–24), the biggest US-stock buying target that week. Classic “buy the dip” behavior on a 3x product.
Bull case: AI chip demand (Nvidia, Broadcom) keeps getting revised up; Jensen Huang just projected chip sales doubling by 2027; semis reclaim momentum and the 3x structure works in your favor on the way up.
Bear case: you’re paying 0.76% a year for the privilege of holding a decaying asset; a sideways market bleeds you; a -10% day in semis is a -30% day for you; the $302 high may not be revisited for a long time.
My framework: SOXL is a momentum-trading tool with a shelf life measured in days to weeks, not a portfolio holding. If you can’t define your exit before entry, you shouldn’t enter.
