A familiar supply event collides with fresh institutional demand this week: roughly 1 billion XRP — worth about $1.5 billion at current prices — is scheduled to leave Ripple’s escrow vaults on October 1, landing squarely in the middle of the strongest ETF buying streak the token has seen. US spot XRP ETFs recorded $75.59 million in net inflows last week, extending their positive streak to 11 consecutive weeks, according to SoSoValue data, with cumulative net inflows near $1.8 billion.
What happened
- The October 1 unlock is hardwired into the escrow framework Ripple set up in 2017, when 55 billion XRP were locked into staggered contracts; about 31.98 billion XRP remain locked today.
- In practice, Ripple has routinely redirected the bulk of each month’s release back into freshly dated escrow, keeping actual new circulating supply well below the headline figure.
- Weekly ETF inflows were about 691% higher than the previous week; the token traded near $1.52–$1.55, up roughly 10% over the past seven days and holding above its 50-day moving average.
- Whales bought about 470 million XRP (roughly $724 million) over five days, and veteran trader Peter Brandt flagged XRP’s long-term chart over the weekend — without offering a price target.
Why it matters
This is a clean test of whether institutional demand is absorbing real supply. The escrow releases are the oldest recurring supply overhang in XRP’s history, and this one arrives while ETFs are pulling in their biggest weekly haul in months. If XRP holds its recent gains through the unlock, it validates the floor that steady ETF accumulation has been building near the $1.60 zone. If selling pressure shows up anyway, it signals the unlock still matters — a useful read for timing October entries.
What to watch
Watch how much of the October 1 tranche Ripple re-locks — the relocked percentage is the number that actually moves the needle on circulating supply. Also on the calendar: the XRP Ledger batch upgrade slipped to October 9, and ETF flows in the first full week of October will show whether the 11-week streak survives the unlock.
