What happened
After President Trump rejected Tehran’s seven-day ceasefire proposal on Saturday, an offer that would have reopened Hormuz and resumed nuclear negotiations, mediators are now pressing Iran to concede on its nuclear program as the price of reviving ceasefire talks with the U.S., the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. Mediators call it a long-shot bid to prevent a return to all-out war.
Trump has reframed the confrontation around his original war goal, preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and told the UN last week he was weighing whether to “annihilate” Iran’s government. Tehran has given mediators little indication it will discuss its nuclear program; Middle East officials say power now rests with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which opposes compromise.
Abbas Araghchi told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that Iran is “fully prepared for the war to resume… even if it comes to a doomsday war,” while adding that Tehran stands ready for diplomacy. Mediators say Iran has compromised on nothing since Trump rejected its plan. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz told CNN that Trump rejected the proposal because Iran was “asking for everything up front” and was not negotiating in good faith.

Why it matters
Markets price this standoff mostly as an oil story, with Brent near or above $100 on the war premium. The nuclear framing widens the risk: escalation toward strikes on nuclear facilities would dwarf the current Hormuz disruption, while a genuine nuclear concession would be the first credible off-ramp. The hardline IRGC grip on power makes quick compromise unlikely, which keeps the risk premium bid.
What to watch
Trump told Axios he expects more talks with Iran this week. Watch whether Tehran offers anything on enrichment, the issue Trump cares about most, and the post-midterm timeline, with the Journal reporting Trump told aides he expects to resume bombing after the elections.
