Commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz came under fire again on Monday evening, as diplomacy between Washington and Tehran fizzled — a fresh escalation in a seven-month conflict that already runs one-fifth of the world’s oil.
**What happened**
– A Kuwaiti-owned very large crude carrier (VLCC), the **Al Funtas** (managed by Kuwait Oil Tanker Company), was hit by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz near Khasab, Oman. A fire broke out on board; it has since been extinguished, the crew are safe, and the vessel is underway to a port of refuge, according to UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and maritime security firms.
– Separately, the Malta-flagged tanker **Kavomaleas** (Dynacom Tankers Management) was struck by an unknown projectile about 8 nautical miles northwest of Kumzar. UKMTO reported the crew safely abandoned the vessel, which was left adrift before being recovered by a tug.
– Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed a separate attack on the small Togo-flagged tanker Trend, asserting “control” over the waterway — a claim that could not be independently verified, as many vessels now transit the strait with tracking switched off.
– The strikes followed the collapse of indirect US-Iran talks in New York, after President Trump rejected Tehran’s seven-day ceasefire proposal over the weekend.**Why it matters**
Confirmed transits through Hormuz remain low, and insurers price every hull accordingly. The result is a structurally tight oil market: Brent is trading near **$103–107** a barrel with steep backwardation — a scramble for prompt barrels — and US diesel prices are near record highs. Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline restart (about 3.5mbpd, vs ~7mbpd capacity) helps, but it cannot replace the strait.

**What to watch**
– Whether Iran’s foreign minister gets the US response he expects this week — the next diplomatic window is narrow.
– Daily monitored transit counts through Hormuz: a recovery would be the clearest de-escalation signal.
– Diesel and tanker freight rates, which are absorbing the risk premium first. How are you positioning around energy exposure right now — hedged, long oil producers, or staying out of the geopolitical noise entirely?
