Sunday’s market story split in two directions. Ukraine launched its biggest-ever drone assault on St. Petersburg’s oil infrastructure, ending any pretense of an energy ceasefire — while a wave of “Iran deal done” headlines turned out to be recycled June content. Brent held near $110 from Friday’s close as traders weighed which headline to believe.

Ukraine’s St. Petersburg Blitz — the Energy Ceasefire Is Dead
Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones at Russia early Sunday — the biggest attack on St. Petersburg since the war began and, per the NY Post, one of the largest strikes on Russia’s oil industry all year.
The targets included the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal (about 12.5 million tons a year of throughput, a key Baltic fuel-export hub — its third hit since June), the Ruchyi oil depot, a VK data center, a 2,000-foot bridge, and a power substation. Gov. Alexander Beglov reported one person killed and five injured, with 12 apartment buildings damaged and Pulkovo Airport suspending flights. Russia’s defense ministry claimed it destroyed 1,015 drones across 15 regions — a record figure.
Why it matters: the energy ceasefire Trump announced last week is over. Kyiv had held fire on energy targets for days; Zelenskyy said Russia struck Ukraine’s oil and gas sector 76 times in the past week, which “freed his hand.” With Russia now a net fuel importer (WSJ) and global diesel markets already strained, every Baltic terminal hit tightens the screws a little more — and it directly complicates the Russian diesel flows Washington was counting on.
The “Iran Deal Done” Headlines Are June Reruns
Saturday, Trump said a deal would be signed Sunday. Sunday morning, Iran’s FM Abbas Araqchi told Reuters the proposal was still on the table and talks were stalled.
Then a wave of low-quality outlets claimed “deal complete,” the blockade lifted, and the Strait reopening Friday — but the content is recycled from June 14: the embedded Trump post is dated June 14, 2026, and the “signing” article’s URL is dated June 17. Even the crypto claims bundled in (“Bitcoin jumps above $65,000”) are months stale — BTC is at ~$81,000.
Why it matters: this is market-moving misinformation. The same aggregators claimed oil had crashed to $81 WTI / $84 Brent, contradicting each other and live quotes. Verified reality: the naval blockade stands, Hormuz flows run near 70% of pre-war baseline (Kpler), and mines remain in the water. Trump has promised an imminent deal dozens of times since the April 8 truce; none has materialized. Trade the facts, not the viral feed.
Oil: $110 in Hand, Sunday Night in Play
Friday’s settle was the story: Brent $109.86 (+3.7%, first $110 touch since May, +4.9% on the week) and WTI $101.41 (+3.5%, +10.6% week, highest since September 17).
Sunday evening, Barron’s flagged oil futures reopening with two forces colliding: Ukraine’s St. Petersburg strike and Washington’s diesel-sanctions waivers. Analysts are leaning bullish on disruption over diplomacy: Religare’s Ajit Mishra told PTI the outlook is “cautiously bullish,” with Brent toward $115–120 on further escalation, and prices likely to “respond more to actual disruptions than to headlines.”
- US crude inventories: -8.56M barrels (largest draw since February), ~3% below the five-year average
- IEA: releasing the last 100M barrels of its March agreement, plus 20M+ barrels of diesel
- Hormuz flows: ~70% of pre-war baseline per Kpler
- Key risk to bulls: any genuine de-escalation collapses the risk premium fast
Crypto: Quiet $81K Sunday, Saylor Teases Another Buy
A calm weekend: BTC traded near $81,100–81,900 Sunday (-0.5% on the day, about -3.2% vs. last Sunday; the week’s range ran $80,117–$84,154). ETH held ~$2,415 (-3.4% week), XRP $1.30, SOL $103.98. Fear & Greed sits in neutral, ~42–53.
Two accumulation signals worth noting. Michael Saylor posted “We found room for more orange” with Strategy’s purchase chart — the usual pre-buy tease. Strategy holds 848,250 BTC at an average cost near $75,444; its last reported buy was 250 BTC. Separately, Morgan Stanley’s Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) has gone 97 trading days without an outflow (since June 1), pulling in +$536.4M in that stretch at the industry’s lowest fee, 0.14% (Farside data).
Week Ahead: Tesla Tuesday, Big Tech, Weak Asia Open
The weekly scoreboard is ugly: S&P 500 -2.1% (worst week since June) to 7,648, Nasdaq -4.5% to 26,140, while the Dow gained 0.7% to 52,002. The 10-year touched 5.32% after Wednesday’s hot CPI (3.7% y/y) before settling at 5.08%; VIX closed near 20 after touching 21.41 Friday, a four-month high.
Sunday-night futures point to a soft Asia open: Nikkei futures fell 1,890 points to ~63,630 (-3%) and TAIEX futures dropped 2.42% in Saturday-night trading.
The earnings calendar is the main event. Tesla reports Q3 Tuesday after the close — consensus near $0.44 EPS on ~$27.9B revenue, with deliveries of 486,532 already a beat; Goldman’s framing stands: robotaxi, FSD, and Optimus matter more than the quarter’s numbers. Barron’s also flags Meta and SpaceX reporting this week, with the AI trade fragile after the semiconductor index’s nine-day losing streak (-10.5% on the week, worst since April 2025). The Fed is in blackout ahead of the October 27–28 meeting.
What to Watch
- Whether Friday’s “signing” claim produces anything real
- Oil’s Sunday-night reopen and Asia’s open
- Tesla Q3 (Tue), big-tech earnings through the week
- Fed blackout; Oct 27–28 FOMC
