What happened
An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, Mokhber, warned Friday that if Iran cannot have flights and receive airport services, then no one in the region can either, according to a report by Nournews. The threat came as flights to and from Iran were suspended at all four Iraqi airports that had been handling the routes — Baghdad, Najaf, Erbil and Sulaimaniya — sources and state media said. UAE stock markets closed slightly lower on Friday, reversing early gains, after the warning circulated, Reuters reported.
Why it matters
Until now the aviation fallout from the U.S.-Iran conflict has mostly hit Iran itself, with earlier U.S. sanctions choking off Iranian flights to the Gulf. Mokhber’s statement is the first explicit threat to extend the disruption to the entire region’s air travel — a meaningful escalation of rhetoric that puts Gulf carriers, business travel and regional logistics in the crosshairs. The suspension at four Iraqi airports shows the disruption is already spreading. Markets are treating this seriously: Abu Dhabi and Dubai benchmarks gave up their gains on the news. There is one counter-signal worth noting — about 60 commercial vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, carrying the highest daily volume of crude oil since early July, according to a U.S. official quoted by Reuters, suggesting trade is adapting even as official threats escalate.
What to watch
Whether any airline formally reroutes or suspends Gulf services over the weekend; any follow-up statements from Tehran or the Gulf states; and how regional equity markets and travel stocks react at Sunday’s Gulf reopen. Is Iran’s threat to regional air travel credible, or is this a negotiating tactic ahead of the Oman talks?
