What happened
On September 24, 2026, Akamai Technologies announced that Anthropic had committed to an $11.6 billion, seven-year purchase of capacity on Akamai Cloud, with an option to expand the commitment by up to another $9 billion — implying a potential total relationship of roughly $20 billion. As part of the arrangement, Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant covering roughly 5% of Akamai’s common stock, with about 2% vesting alongside the initial commitment. Akamai estimates approximately $5.5 billion in capital expenditures tied to the initial commitment. The market loved it: Akamai shares jumped roughly 22% in extended trading following the announcement. The Anthropic deal stacks on top of more than $2.8 billion in multi-year cloud-infrastructure commitments Akamai announced earlier this year. For context, Anthropic has been on an aggressive compute-hoarding spree, reportedly agreeing last month to spend $45 billion renting AI cloud capacity from Nscale’s West Virginia data center campus.
Why it matters
This is the clearest validation yet of Akamai’s pivot from legacy CDN into AI cloud infrastructure — a single customer commitment of this scale effectively underwrites the thesis. The warrant structure is equally telling: by taking equity upside, Anthropic is signaling confidence that durable AI compute demand will fill this capacity, a point eMarketer analyst Jacob Bourne described as a vote of confidence. The flip side is capital intensity. Roughly $5.5 billion of capex is very heavy relative to Akamai’s size, so returns will hinge on execution — hitting delivery milestones, maintaining high utilization, and managing cost overruns. If Akamai delivers, this transforms its growth profile; if it stumbles, the balance sheet absorbs the damage.
