Amneal Pharmaceuticals has won FDA approval for its generic version of the branded hormone drug Somatuline Depot and launched it immediately — a direct shot at a U.S. market worth nearly $1 billion a year.
What happened. Amneal announced on September 21 that the FDA approved its lanreotide injection (120 mg/0.5 mL) in a sterile, single-dose prefilled syringe referencing Somatuline Depot. The product received the FDA’s Competitive Generic Therapy (CGT) designation — and the company launched it right away. IQVIA data cited by Amneal puts Somatuline Depot’s U.S. annual sales at about $983 million for the 12 months ended July 2026. Lanreotide treats acromegaly, advanced gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, and carcinoid syndrome.
Why it matters. Complex injectables are among the hardest generics to manufacture — and the most lucrative. A CGT-designated generic in a near-$1-billion market can meaningfully move the needle for a mid-cap like Amneal, whose Affordable Medicines business is built on exactly these launches. Senior VP Srinivas Kone called it “another material growth driver,” pointing to Amneal’s large-scale in-house manufacturing capacity as the edge that lets it supply the market reliably. For investors, this is the kind of under-the-radar, cash-flow-positive catalyst that rarely makes headlines but steadily compounds.
What to watch. How quickly Amneal captures share and where pricing settles versus Somatuline Depot; whether other generic challengers file; and Amneal’s next complex-injectable launches, which the company says are expanding.

Not financial advice.Do complex generics like this deserve more attention from investors, or are the margins too thin to care about?
