Prime Medicine shares jumped 13% in after-hours trading on Thursday after the gene-editing biotech said the FDA cleared its investigational new drug (IND) application for PM647, an experimental treatment for the genetic disease alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD).
What happened. The FDA clearance — reported by Dow Jones Newswires on September 24 — allows Prime Medicine to begin clinical studies of PM647 in the United States. Shares rose to $3.47 in extended trading after closing the regular session down 1.9% at $3.07. PM647 is built on Prime Medicine’s Prime Editing platform, designed to correct the underlying genetic mutation behind AATD rather than merely replacing the missing protein, as existing therapies do. CEO Allan Reine called the clearance “an important milestone” for the company’s liver franchise, saying PM647 “has the potential to change how AATD is treated.” With the stock down about 12% year-to-date through Thursday’s close, the bounce resets sentiment for a beaten-down name.
Why it matters. IND clearances are binary events for small-cap biotechs: they validate a platform enough for regulators to allow human testing. Prime Editing is one of the most-watched next-generation editing technologies, and PM647 is a flagship test case. A clean entry into the clinic could re-rate the stock if early safety data holds — and it puts Prime Medicine on the radar for investors hunting the next gene-editing winner.
What to watch. The Phase 1 trial design — dosing, patient count, and the timing of first data readouts. Also watch the cash runway: small biotechs often raise capital after a pop like this, which can dilute shareholders. And see whether larger gene-editing players respond with their own pipeline updates.
