What happened. Technology has reclaimed sector leadership in a hurry. Per Investor’s Business Daily (Sept. 25), the IBD 50 held just 7 tech stocks a month ago — none in the top 25 — amid a dimmed AI outlook. Now 15 tech names sit on the list, with most charts looking strong. Technology is up about 4.5% so far this month, the best performance among the 11 S&P 500 sectors — Technology and Communication Services are the only two S&P sectors higher in September, while the rest show losses of roughly 2% to 6%. Individual standouts: AMD and Cloudflare broke out of bases in recent days, each up roughly 10% on the week; cybersecurity name Rubrik is at record highs; Palantir climbed above an alternate buy point of 188.37 on Wednesday; Nvidia has been erratic but rebounded toward its 227.92 buy point; and TSMC holds spots on IBD’s Leaderboard and Long-Term Leaders lists. The earlier drags were familiar — worries over AI dangers, data-center backlash, and an overheated AI trade — which had knocked many techs down 20–40%, some as much as 55%, before the rebound.

Why it matters. Sector leadership matters more than index levels for active investors, and the rebound signals the market is again willing to pay for AI-linked earnings growth — even with the 10-year yield above 5.17% and a hawkish Fed repricing hike odds. Breakouts in AMD, Cloudflare, Palantir, and Rubrik suggest breadth is returning rather than just megacap drag carrying the tape. The caution flag is real, though: erratic price action in Nvidia and record-level concentration mean this rotation is fragile if yields keep climbing or the next round of AI capex commentary disappoints.

What to watch. The October Fed meeting (hike odds now near 70%), whether these breakouts hold above their entries, upcoming big-tech earnings, and whether yield pressure re-triggers the 20–40% drawdown pattern that punished the group earlier this year.

Discussion question: Is this tech rebound the start of a durable rotation back into AI names, or just an oversold bounce with the 10-year over 5.17%? What’s your positioning? Tell us in the comments.
