The Trump administration is weighing an initiative to promote dollar-backed stablecoins abroad as part of a broader push to reinforce the U.S. dollar’s role as the world’s reserve currency, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday (September 23, 2026). The plan under consideration could involve joint ventures between the government and private-sector firms, spanning several federal agencies: the Treasury Department, the State Department, and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

    (1) What happened: The initiative would seek to expand international use of dollar-denominated stablecoins while potentially boosting demand for U.S. Treasurys — the primary reserve asset behind dollar-backed stablecoins. The scale is already enormous: USDT and USDC account for nearly 90% of the roughly $292 billion stablecoin market, and stablecoin issuers already hold nearly $200 billion in Treasury bills and other short-term securities, according to Deputy Treasury Secretary Francis Brooke (September 22). Last year’s GENIUS Act requires stablecoin issuers to back tokens with dollar and short-term Treasury reserves, giving Washington a ready regulatory on-ramp. The geopolitical backdrop is stark: China is advancing its digital yuan through Project mBridge, the ECB is preparing a digital euro pilot for the second half of 2027, and the IMF has warned that wider stablecoin adoption could accelerate capital flight in emerging economies.

    (2) Why it matters: This would turn stablecoins into an instrument of dollar statecraft. Every dollar of stablecoin demand abroad becomes incremental demand for T-bills — effectively exporting Treasury financing to global crypto users at a moment when the 10-year yield sits at multi-decade highs. It also pits Washington directly against Beijing and Frankfurt in the race to define the rails of digital money, and it reframes stablecoin issuers from lightly regulated fintechs into quasi-sovereign partners. The IMF’s capital-flight warning is the honest caveat: dollar stablecoins could hollow out weaker currencies faster than some central banks can respond, inviting political pushback abroad.

    (3) What to watch: whether the initiative gets formally announced and which agencies receive budget authority; any DFC-backed joint ventures or public-private partnerships; how China and the ECB respond; and the next GENIUS Act rulemakings, which will determine how much of that roughly $292 billion must sit in Treasurys.

What do you think: does a government-backed push for dollar stablecoins strengthen the dollar’s dominance — or hand too much power to private issuers like Tether and Circle?
