Thursday’s White House summit between President Trump and China’s Xi Jinping produced plenty of ceremony but little substance — and one concrete market-relevant outcome: the US-China trade truce was extended only two months, to January 10.
That extension buys time, not stability. Treasury Secretary Bessent confirmed the deal after talks with China’s vice premier, but noted China is lagging on its commitments: Beijing is meeting its 25-million-ton soybean purchase target yet falling short on the pledged $17 billion in other agricultural goods, and rare-earth deliveries are also behind. With tariff rates held down for now, companies face more of the same policy whiplash that has defined the past year.
The symbolism was richer. Xi gifted two giant pandas for Zoo Atlanta, continuing Beijing’s classic panda diplomacy, and Trump rolled out the full red-carpet treatment — the first time a US president has greeted a foreign leader at Joint Base Andrews since 1962, with B-1 bombers and F-22s on display. Xi called the two nations “partners, not rivals” and floated cooperation on AI regulation and military-to-military dialogue, though export controls on advanced chips remain firmly in place.
Two more multilateral summits — in Shenzhen and Miami — are scheduled before year-end, giving both sides a window to turn this placeholder truce into something durable. For now, markets get certainty measured in weeks, not quarters. Watch whether the January 10 deadline produces real tariff relief or just another rollover.
