US and Iranian negotiators in New York are exploring a phased path out of the nearly seven-month US-Iran conflict, Reuters reported Thursday, citing sources close to the talks.
Under the arrangement being discussed, Tehran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz — the blocked global oil supply route — in exchange for Washington lifting its economic blockade of Iran. Tehran could also regain access to frozen assets.
The main obstacle is sequencing: neither side wants to give up its leverage first, according to two Iranian sources, two regional officials and two Western diplomatic sources. A senior Iranian official said the most plausible route is stages: “The first would be to end the blockade and reopen Hormuz.”
Trump has said he thinks a deal could come after the November 3 midterm elections. An earlier US-Iran understanding collapsed in July, so negotiators are focused on making any concessions durable.
Why it matters: Hormuz is the world’s most important oil chokepoint. A genuine reopening would be a major bearish catalyst for crude, a relief valve for global inflation — and a tailwind for equities.
