    What happened

The bond selloff reached a new extreme on Wednesday: the 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.304% intraday, breaking its 2007 peak and marking the highest level since May 2002 — a 24-year high, per Tradeweb data reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The day was a whipsaw. Yields fell in the morning after the August core PCE inflation report came in cooler than forecast, and markets cut October Fed hike odds. Then the selloff resumed in the afternoon:

    • Q2 GDP growth was revised up to 2.2% from 1.5%
    • September ADP private payrolls beat expectations
    • Chicago PMI surged to 58.8 from 47.1, far above the 51.2 forecast — a possible preview of Thursday’s national ISM data

The 2-year yield sat at 4.893% late Wednesday, while the 30-year hit a 24-year high of 5.621% on Tuesday. Money markets priced only a 37% chance of an October Fed hike, down from 70% on Monday, after dovish comments from New York Fed President John Williams.

    Why it matters

The 10-year is the benchmark for mortgages, auto loans and corporate borrowing — at a 24-year high, higher costs ripple into housing and business investment, the exact affordability pain readers are already feeling.

Markets read the day as: inflation is cooling (the PCE undershoot) but growth is reaccelerating — the combination that keeps the Fed hawkish. As Fifth Third’s Bill Adams put it, inflation’s trend is “lower but still not close to their target and not improving.”

Tickmill strategist Patrick Munnelly flagged persistent term-premium expansion tied to fiscal deficits, heavy Treasury supply and massive corporate debt issuance backing AI infrastructure — forces that keep pushing yields up even when inflation data cooperates.

    What to watch

    • Friday’s jobs report, with the ADP beat as a preview
    • September CPI — Adams says the Fed’s call depends on it
    • Thursday’s ISM figures following the Chicago PMI surprise
    • The October 28 FOMC meeting (hike odds at just 37%)

How are you positioning with the 10-year at a 24-year high — locking in yields, waiting for a Fed cut, or staying short duration?
