AMD is making its biggest AI talent play yet: the chipmaker said Monday it will acquire World Labs, the spatial-intelligence startup co-founded by AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal worth about $8.2 billion.
What happened
World Labs builds spatial-intelligence models that generate and simulate interactive 3D environments — a step beyond large language models toward “physical AI” and robotics. As part of the deal, Li, a Stanford computer-vision pioneer, will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. CEO Lisa Su said the World Labs team brings “exceptional research leadership and model expertise” to develop the hardware, software and systems for the next generation of AI. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year.
Why it matters
- AMD recently crossed a $1 trillion market capitalization, and its stock has soared roughly 277% over the past 12 months on AI hardware demand.
- The acquisition continues AMD’s strategy of buying up the AI stack, following the $50 billion Xilinx deal (2022) and the ~$5 billion ZT Systems purchase (2024).
- Owning model talent gives chipmakers early insight into where AI development is heading and lets them shape product roadmaps — critical as AI developers increasingly design their own chips.
What to watch
Watch for the closing timeline (target: end of 2026), any regulatory scrutiny, and whether Li’s research team accelerates AMD’s physical-AI silicon roadmap. AMD shares fell 3.6% Monday in a broad chip selloff but edged up about 0.2% in after-hours trading on the news.

Does Fei-Fei Li’s arrival make AMD a genuine full-stack rival to Nvidia’s ecosystem — or is star talent alone not enough?
