The Thesis
Applied Materials (AMAT) is the largest semiconductor equipment maker in the world, and it just delivered a quarter that proved AI capital spending is still accelerating. The stock sits at $530, roughly 28% below its July peak, after a summer selloff that had nothing to do with its fundamentals.
With a forward P/E back at its historical norm and a PEG ratio of 1.0, this is the cleanest entry the AI equipment trade has offered in months.
Business Snapshot
Applied Materials builds the machines that build chips — deposition, etch, inspection, and metrology tools sold to TSMC, Samsung, Intel, and every major foundry. Few businesses have a stronger moat: the equipment is mission-critical, switching costs are enormous, and the company layers a high-margin services business on top.
Its $5 billion EPIC Center in Silicon Valley has become the industry’s collaboration hub, with Samsung, SK hynix, and now KIOXIA and BE Semiconductor joining as innovation partners.
Financials: What the Numbers Say
The fiscal Q3 report on August 13 was a beat in everything but name:
- Revenue: $9.12 billion, up 24.8% year over year, beating the $8.99 billion consensus
- EPS: $3.50 vs. $3.40 expected — up from $2.48 a year ago
- Net margin: 30.05%; return on equity: 38.02%
- Debt-to-equity: 0.20, current ratio 2.42 — a fortress balance sheet
Management guided Q4 EPS to $3.82–$4.22, implying the acceleration continues into year-end. For a capital-equipment company, 30% net margins and near-40% ROE are extraordinary numbers.
Chart & Technicals
The chart tells a classic reset story. AMAT peaked near $740 in July, then washed out ~44% to the $410 area in September — right at its 200-day moving average — before snapping back.
- Price: ~$530, above the 50-day (~$486) and 200-day (~$474) moving averages
- Momentum: +16.6% over the last 30 days, consolidating just under resistance at $533.60
- Support: $517 (recent consolidation floor), then the 50-day at $486
- Resistance: $533.60, then $547.25
The stock reclaimed both major moving averages in late September and has been building a base since. That base-above-the-50-day structure is exactly what you want to see before the next leg.
Valuation
AMAT trades at 28.8x forward earnings — essentially its historical average of 28.3x — with a PEG of 1.0x. You are paying a market multiple for a company growing at roughly the rate the market grows, except the growth here is real: 24.8% revenue growth and raised guidance.
The analyst consensus is a Moderate Buy with a mean target of $629.38 — about 19% above the current price. Note the honest tension: Morgan Stanley cut its target to $563 on September 28 while raising its 2027 revenue and EPS estimates. The business is accelerating; the multiple is being disciplined.
Catalysts & What to Watch
- November 12, 2026 — fiscal Q4 earnings. The $3.82–$4.22 guidance range sets a high bar, but memory demand is running hot (see our Micron deep dive below).
- EPIC Center partnerships — KIOXIA joined September 29 and BE Semiconductor joined October 1 as an innovation partner, targeting 3D ICs, hybrid bonding, and panel-scale packaging for AI systems. These lock in Applied’s role in the next packaging cycle.
- Dividend — $0.53 quarterly ($2.12 annualized), payable December 10 to holders of record November 19.
- Watch: the AI memory cycle and any new China export-control headlines.
Risks
- Capex cyclicality. Semiconductor equipment is the most cyclical link in the chip chain. If foundries pause spending, orders can fall 20–30% in a quarter — it has happened before.
- China export controls. Applied derives meaningful revenue from China, and tighter U.S. restrictions are a permanent overhang.
- The multiple is full, not cheap. At 39.8x EV/EBITDA and a 0.7% FCF yield, the stock already discounts strong execution. There is no margin-of-safety discount here.
- Customer concentration. A handful of giant foundries drive most orders; a single customer’s capex cut moves the needle.
The Bottom Line
Applied Materials is the best-positioned equipment maker in the AI buildout, and the summer selloff handed investors a second chance: 28% below the peak, forward multiple back to normal, guidance raised, and partnerships deepening. This is a quality compounder at a fair price — the kind of setup that rewards 6–18 month patience.
For investors who want AI exposure without betting on which chip startup wins, AMAT is the picks-and-shovels answer.

What do you think — with KIOXIA and BE Semiconductor now collaborating at the EPIC Center, does advanced packaging (not lithography) become the next bottleneck and profit pool in the AI chip cycle?
