Bitcoin’s dominance of the crypto market has slipped below the psychologically important 60% level, falling to 58.5% as of September 26, according to a Crypto Briefing report via TradingView. At the same time, Glassnode’s Altcoin Cycle Signal — a 0-to-100 gauge of conditions favorable for altcoin outperformance — hit 81.25 on September 22, its highest reading of the cycle. The altcoin market cap (excluding Bitcoin) has climbed to roughly $1.17–1.19 trillion in late September, up about 33% since mid-August.

Rotation is already visible in individual names: Sei jumped 23.58% in 24 hours, Aerodrome Finance gained 20.7%, and NEAR Protocol rose 9.3%, while Bitcoin itself drifted near $84,000 after failing to hold above $87,000 earlier in the week (CoinMarketCap/CoinGecko data).

Why it matters: in the 2017 and 2021 cycles, declining Bitcoin dominance was the starting gun for explosive altcoin rallies — dominance fell from 60–70% into the 40–50% range as capital rotated downstream. But 2026 is structurally different: spot Bitcoin ETFs have become the dominant force in crypto capital allocation, pulling in $2.39 billion in net inflows in the week of September 21–25 alone. Institutional buyers accumulating Bitcoin through ETFs don’t typically rotate into small-cap altcoins, which is why the broader Altcoin Season Index — based on actual price performance versus Bitcoin — still sits in neutral territory at 45–53, well below the 75 threshold that confirms a full altseason.

What to watch: whether BTC dominance breaks decisively below 58% and whether the Altcoin Season Index starts climbing toward 75 — that is the confirmation altcoin bulls are waiting for. ETF flows are the anchor: sustained Bitcoin ETF inflows could keep BTC the outperformer, while a slowdown could free up rotation into alts. And with the October Fed meeting on the horizon, the rate path remains the swing factor for risk appetite across crypto.
