California gas prices are closing in on their all-time record while U.S. diesel has blasted into uncharted territory, with Sunday’s Riverside County average sitting just 8.6 cents shy of the 2022 peak. The fuel-price squeeze now underway is shaping up as one of the fall’s most consequential economic stories.
What happened
Riverside County’s average hit $6.287 a gallon on Sunday — the 40th consecutive daily increase, its highest level since October 10, 2022, and only 8.6 cents below the all-time record of $6.373 set on October 5, 2022. The county average has climbed 76.7 cents over those 40 days and $1.736 since the February 28 start of the U.S./Israel war on Iran.
The pain is region-wide. Los Angeles County averaged $6.387 on September 26, just 10.6 cents from its $6.493 record, and Orange County’s $6.369 sits 8.9 cents below its $6.458 peak. Nationally, regular gasoline is running about $4.48 a gallon — the highest this late in the calendar year on record, according to GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan, up roughly 38 cents in a month and $1.34 from a year ago.
The bigger shock is diesel. The U.S. diesel average has set a fresh record at roughly $6.51–$6.53 a gallon, up nearly a dollar in just four weeks and well above the prior 2022 record of $5.816. Behind the surge: EIA data showing spot gasoline prices up 3.8–5.1% across major markets, the Strait of Hormuz running at barely 10% of normal tanker tonnage, and the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve at its lowest level since 1982.
Key figures:
- Riverside County gas: $6.287/gal — 8.6 cents from the all-time record
- U.S. diesel: $6.51–$6.53/gal — a new all-time record
- National regular: ~$4.48/gal — highest this late in the year on record
- Strait of Hormuz: running at ~10% of usual tonnage
- Strategic Petroleum Reserve: lowest level since 1982
Why it matters
Diesel is the economy’s fuel. Trucks, freight, farm equipment, and construction all run on it, so record $6.53 diesel feeds directly into the price of everything from groceries to building materials. This is a fresh inflation impulse arriving at the worst possible moment — one week after the Fed’s first rate hike since 2023, with Chairman Kevin Warsh warning that “inflation is too high, and has been for too long.”
Gasoline also remains a top voter concern heading into the early-November midterms, which gives pump prices real political weight in Washington right now. Goldman Sachs recently cut its 12-month recession odds to 15% from 30% in March, but runaway fuel costs are the freshest threat to that resilience story.
What to watch
The immediate catalyst is the Strait of Hormuz: President Trump said Sunday he expects talks with Iran this week, and any sign of normalized flows could cool crude quickly. Traders will also watch the weekly EIA inventory data and the retail gasoline/diesel survey trends for evidence the crunch is easing.
The macro calendar is loaded too. The core PCE inflation report drops Wednesday, September 30, and the monthly jobs report follows Friday, October 2 — both will be read through the lens of this fuel shock.
