What happened
AT&T signed a multi-year agreement worth more than $3 billion with Corning to supply fiber and cable, as the telecom giant expands its network to meet surging data demand. Corning shares rose about 4.7% Tuesday while AT&T slipped 1.7%.
- The average AT&T fiber household now uses more than 1 terabyte per month — 5x the level in 2016 — expected to reach 2–2.5 TB by 2030
- Supports AT&T’s goal of bringing fiber connectivity to 60 million locations by the end of 2030
- Echoes a multi-billion-dollar Verizon–Corning fiber agreement reached earlier this month (80M+ miles of optical fiber over five years)
- AT&T has committed more than $250B over five years to U.S. connectivity, including its $5.75B Lumen fiber acquisition
Why it matters
Fiber is the quiet backbone of the AI boom — every AI query, cloud workload, and video call rides it. With carriers racing to expand fiber footprints, Corning’s optical communications business is converting carrier capex into durable multi-year revenue. For investors, Corning is an AI-infrastructure play without GPU-cycle risk: demand is anchored in physical network build-outs rather than chip release schedules.
What to watch
Corning’s next quarterly print for optical segment margins; the pace of AT&T’s 60-million-location rollout; whether more carrier fiber deals follow; and any signs of fiber capex slowing into 2027.
