Delta Air Lines missed third-quarter earnings and slashed its full-year outlook on Friday. Adjusted diluted EPS came in at $1.72, below the roughly $1.77–$1.80 analyst consensus, while adjusted operating revenue of $17.59 billion narrowly missed estimates.

    Key numbers:
    – Adjusted EPS: $1.72 vs ~$1.77–$1.80 consensus (GAAP diluted EPS $1.15)
    – Adjusted operating revenue: $17.59B, just shy of the ~$17.65B estimate
    – FY 2026 adjusted EPS guidance cut to $5.10–$5.60, from $6.50–$7.50 — roughly 24% off at the midpoint
    – Q4 adjusted EPS guidance: $1.15–$1.65 on revenue of about $17.5B (~20% growth), trailing consensus
    – Fuel: adjusted fuel expense up 62% YoY to $4.14B; $6B in incremental 2026 fuel costs

The guidance cut is the real story. Adjusted fuel prices hit $3.61 a gallon, up 60% from a year ago, and third-quarter fuel expense ran about $500 million above Delta’s own guidance from just three months earlier. The fuel surge dragged the adjusted operating margin to 9.4%, down from 11.1% a year ago.

Demand is notably not the problem. Delta delivered record September-quarter adjusted revenue of about $17.6 billion, with unit revenue up roughly 15% on flat capacity and pretax profit holding steady at $1.5 billion despite absorbing a $1.6 billion fuel spike. Premium cabins and loyalty revenue each grew about 18%, while cargo and MRO each rose nearly 30% — high-margin diversified streams now account for 61% of adjusted revenue.

That resilience is why the stock reaction stayed contained. Shares gapped down roughly 4% before the open — an earnings-day stumble, not a panic — while most analysts kept Buy ratings and trimmed estimates. Delta still expects about $2.5 billion in full-year free cash flow and plans to repay more than $2 billion of debt.

What to watch is margin math. Delta expects Q4 fuel prices to roughly double year over year, and management says fare increases are meeting limited consumer resistance. If fuel stays elevated into 2027, pricing power gets tested every quarter.

With demand strong but fuel swallowing the gains, is Delta a pricing-power story or a fuel-price story right now? Share your take below.
