PNC Financial reported third-quarter results on Thursday with adjusted EPS of $5.09, beating consensus around $4.92–4.98 — then raised its full-year 2026 outlook in a way that deserves attention.

    – Revenue: $6.56B, up 11% YoY (missed $6.61B consensus)
    – Net interest income: $4.21B, up 15% YoY
    – Adjusted EPS: $5.09 vs ~$4.92–4.98 consensus
    – Efficiency ratio: 57%; return on tangible common equity: 18.3%

The guidance is the story. PNC now expects 2026 net interest income to surge 15.5% and total revenue to climb 13.7% — an unusually specific, confident call. The drivers: commercial loan growth, the FirstBank acquisition, and lower funding costs. Average loans rose 2% sequentially to $372.2B.

But the stock fell about 3% in premarket trading to around $209. Revenue and the 2.94% net interest margin both missed, and a $36M integration-cost drag from the FirstBank deal weighed on the quarter. Credit bears will also note nonperforming loans rose 8% to $2.19B.

CEO Bill Demchak’s message was unambiguous: the national expansion strategy is working and the bank is well positioned. The question is whether investors believe the 15.5% NII growth number — a big ask in any rate environment.

What to watch next: FirstBank integration progress, deposit costs if the Fed moves again (rate-hike chatter picked up this week on the hot September CPI), and whether commercial credit stays clean.

PNC is guiding 15.5% net interest income growth for 2026 — with rate-hike bets suddenly back on the table, is that ambition or overconfidence?
