The Ethereum ETF rally in flows just hit a speed bump. US spot Ethereum ETFs posted $2.81 million in net outflows on September 29, ending a seven-day inflow streak that had pulled in roughly $850.8 million since September 18. Bitcoin ETFs moved the opposite way on the same day, taking in $66.19 million and extending their own inflow run to nine straight sessions.
What happened
- Ethereum ETFs: -$2.81M net flows on Sept 29, ending a 7-day streak (~$850.8M accumulated)
- Bitcoin ETFs: +$66.19M on Sept 29, extending inflow streak to 9 sessions
- BlackRock’s ETHA saw the largest Ethereum outflow; Grayscale’s trust partially offset it
- ETH traded at $2,673.54, down 3.32% over the week even during the ETF inflow streak
- ETH ETF total AUM: $17.79B; 30-day net inflows remain positive at ~$979.7M
Why it matters
The divergence tells a story: institutional demand is consolidating around Bitcoin while Ethereum is still proving its bid. ETH falling 3.3% over a week of heavy ETF buying is a red flag — it suggests the inflows were absorbed by sellers rather than lifting price. The 30-day picture for ETH ETFs is still constructive (nearly $1B of net inflows), but the broken streak shows momentum is fragile.
What to watch
Watch whether Ethereum’s outflows were a one-day blip or the start of a rotation back into Bitcoin — flow data over the next few sessions will answer it. Also watch BTC’s ~$84,000 resistance zone: sustained ETF inflows plus a clean break could set the tone for Q4 crypto flows overall.

Is Ethereum losing its institutional bid to Bitcoin, or is this just one soft session before inflows resume?
