GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen bought 450,000 GME shares on September 29 at a weighted average of $23.4749 — about $10.6 million of personal capital — and disclosed it in an SEC Form 4 filed this week. The purchase lifts his direct ownership to 40,948,522 shares, with beneficial ownership of 44,683,306 shares (about 8.8%, including warrants) per an amended Schedule 13D. GME rose nearly 2% after hours on the disclosure.

    What happened

    Key figures:

    • $10.6M purchase: 450,000 shares at about $23.47 on Sept 29.
    • Third buy this month: 1M shares at ~$20.38 (~$20.4M) on Sept 10; 1.15M shares at ~$22.94 (~$26.4M) on Sept 21.
    • September total: 2.6M shares, about $57M of Cohen’s own money.
    • GME rose nearly 2% after hours on the filing.
    • GameStop Q2 2026 (ended Aug 1): net sales $790.2M (−19% YoY), net income $298.7M (+77%), record Q2 operating income $160.2M; $5.4B in cash, marketable securities and digital assets plus ~43.4M eBay shares (~$4.9B).

    Why it matters

Insider buying is the most credible bullish signal a CEO can send, and Cohen is sending it loudly: $57 million in a single month. Back-to-back purchases at rising prices ($20.38, then $22.94, now $23.47) suggest conviction, not a one-off headline grab.

The context matters too. GameStop’s Q2 was a strange mix — sales down 19% but net income up 77% with record operating income. Cohen’s buying implies he sees the turnaround math, not the retail narrative, and the market is starting to listen.

With $5.4 billion in liquid assets plus a roughly $4.9 billion eBay stake, GameStop’s balance sheet is its real story. Insider accumulation of this scale invites investors to value the cash pile, not the console counter.

    What to watch

Watch for further Form 4s — a fourth buy in October would confirm a sustained accumulation program. Also watch whether institutional holders start following Cohen’s lead now that the CEO owns nearly 9%.

Is Cohen’s $57M buying spree a signal you trust, or is GME still a story stock for you?
