    What happened

Shares of South Korea’s HLB (028300) surged 29.95% to the daily upper limit at 39,700 won on Monday — the first trading day after the Chuseok holiday — after the U.S. FDA approved Lyfixtu (lirafugratinib), a treatment for FGFR2-altered bile duct cancer.

HLB’s U.S. subsidiary Elevar Therapeutics received the FDA approval on September 23 for second-line use in adults with locally advanced or metastatic bile duct cancer carrying FGFR2 fusions or rearrangements. HLB says this is the first time a Korean pharmaceutical company has filed a new drug application directly with the FDA for a global cancer drug and won clearance.

    Why it matters

The approval is a landmark for Korea’s biotech sector: HLB went straight to the FDA instead of partnering with a Western pharma — a route few non-U.S. companies attempt. Elevar plans a Q4 2026 U.S. launch and has also filed with the European Medicines Agency (September 15).

The market reaction — hitting the price ceiling even in premarket on Nextrade — shows how much was riding on this decision. HLB had fallen roughly 39% for the year through September 23, after its liver cancer combo (rivoceranib + camrelizumab) received a third FDA complete response letter in July.

    What to watch

Three things from here: (1) the U.S. launch price and payer uptake in Q4, (2) the EMA review outcome, and (3) whether this first-direct-FDA precedent opens the door for other Korean biotechs — and whether HLB’s liver cancer program can finally clear the FDA’s bar.

Does HLB’s direct-to-FDA route mark a turning point for Korean biotech going solo in the U.S., or was this a one-off win after a bruising year?
