The afternoon belonged to the skeptics. The Nasdaq suffered its worst day since mid-August after a Financial Times report showed OpenAI’s annualized revenue running $20 billion below earlier signals — while SpaceX announced a move into the wireless business that sank telecom stocks, and a Starbucks–Chipotle takeover report electrified restaurant shares. Bonds found relief as the 30-year auction passed its test and President Trump ruled out any Iran strike before the November midterms.
OpenAI Revenue Gap Spooks the AI Trade
The Financial Times, citing materials OpenAI shared with investors, reported the company’s annualized recurring revenue is about $20 billion lighter than what it had signaled at the end of September. That puts the figure near $50 billion rather than the previously implied $70 billion.
The AI trade — priced for perfection — fell fast. The Nasdaq Composite sank 1.3%, its worst single-day performance since mid-August, while the S&P 500 fell 0.5%. Nvidia dropped nearly 3%, the semiconductor ETF SOXX fell 3.5%, and the Roundhill memory-chip ETF tumbled 5%.
- Discrepancy: $20 billion below previously signaled revenue
- Nasdaq: -1.3% (worst day since mid-August); S&P 500: -0.5%; Dow: +0.1%
- Nvidia: -3%; SOXX: -3.5%; Magnificent Seven ETF: -1%
Why it matters: the whole market’s valuation rests on AI demand holding up. One strategist summed up the mood — when a sector is priced for perfection, anything less is a reason to sell. Full answers arrive with earnings season in a few weeks.
Trump: No Iran Attack Before the Midterms
President Trump posted on Truth Social that the US “will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held on November 3rd.” That undercut reports that the Pentagon was developing strike options that could be exercised before the vote.
Oil faded from its highs. Brent settled near $104.28 a barrel, up 4% on the day but well off the $105.91 intraday peak. The 10-year Treasury yield eased to about 5.23% from a morning run toward 5.37%.
- Brent: settled ~$104.28 (+4%), off $105.91 intraday high
- 10-year yield: fell to ~5.23% from near 5.37%
- Tanker Acers struck by projectiles north of Qatar, deep inside the Gulf (UKMTO)
Why it matters: the post cools the immediate escalation premium, but tanker attacks are spreading deeper into the Gulf and Hormuz traffic is still a fraction of pre-war levels. Energy inflation remains the bond market’s biggest headache.
30-Year Auction Passes the Test at 5.618%
The Treasury sold $22 billion of 30-year bonds at a high yield of 5.618% — reportedly the highest since 2000. Demand held: the bid-to-cover ratio of 2.54 beat the 2.41 average of recent auctions, and indirect bidders (a proxy for foreign buyers) took 72.3% of supply.
Yields fell on the result. The 10-year dropped about 5 basis points to 5.227% and the 30-year to around 5.60%, off intraday highs above 5.73%. The Treasury also accepted the maximum $6 billion in a buyback of 20- to 30-year bonds.
- Auction yield: 5.618% on $22B; bid-to-cover 2.54; indirect 72.3%
- Fed’s Musalem: rates may need to climb for the next 6–9 months
- Fed’s Waller: more hikes likely needed, but there’s “flexibility” on pace
Why it matters: the market’s biggest fear was a failed auction forcing a disorderly yield spike. A clean sale buys calm — but hawkish Fed officials keep December live, with CME odds near 80%.
SpaceX Buys 800MHz Spectrum, Telecom Stocks Tumble
SpaceX agreed to buy up to 14 megahertz of low-band 800MHz spectrum from Grain Management, pending FCC approval. The company said the move paves the way for Starlink Mobile to become “a major mobile carrier in the US.”
Investors dumped the incumbents. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile each fell roughly 5–7% in post-market and overnight trading. SpaceX is following its earlier EchoStar spectrum deals with the terrestrial airwaves needed for a real wireless network.
- Deal: up to 14 MHz of 800MHz spectrum from Grain Management
- Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile: roughly 5–7% lower in after-hours trade
- Context: the big three carriers recently formed a defensive satellite JV
Why it matters: telecoms face a potential new nationwide competitor with a satellite backbone. For investors, another pricing war is the risk — for consumers, possibly better rural coverage.
Starbucks Explored a Chipotle Takeover
The Financial Times reported that Starbucks has worked with advisers in recent months on a takeover proposal for Chipotle — a deal that would reunite CEO Brian Niccol with the chain he ran from 2018 to 2024. No formal offer has been submitted.
Chipotle jumped about 6–7% to roughly $33, valuing the burrito chain near $41 billion. Starbucks slipped. The deal would eclipse Burger King’s $11.4 billion Tim Hortons purchase as one of the largest restaurant combinations on record.
- Chipotle: +6–7% (~$33, ~$41B market value)
- Starbucks: modestly lower; would need a large premium
- Angle: Niccol could use Starbucks’ 41,000 global outlets to expand Chipotle abroad
Why it matters: financing a $40-billion-plus deal with the 10-year at 5.3% is expensive, and investors priced in real doubt. But the bid interest lifted beaten-down fast-casual peers like Jersey Mike’s, Dutch Bros and CAVA.
Crypto Bleeds as ETFs See $485M in Outflows
US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $485 million in net outflows on Wednesday — the largest since June 25 — erasing October’s inflows. Ether ETFs logged a seventh straight outflow session at $161 million.
Bitcoin traded near $82,700, down about 2% over 24 hours. Ethereum fell toward $2,560. Rising Treasury yields and geopolitical risk keep pressure on speculative assets.
Why it matters: ETF flows are crypto’s institutional backbone. When they reverse at this scale, rallies lose their footing — watch whether the outflows persist into Friday’s close.
Your turn: The AI trade took its first real hit in months — is the OpenAI revenue gap a buying opportunity in chip stocks, or would you wait for earnings season in a few weeks? Share your take in the comments.
