Moderna, Precigen Hit Multi-Year Highs on Analyst Praise for Cancer Drugs

Moderna and Precigen shares both hit multi-year highs Friday as analysts threw weight behind each company’s cancer pipeline — a rare double dose of good news for two very different turnaround stories.

    What happened

    • Moderna (MRNA) gained 1.5% Friday to a fresh 52-week high, its highest level since January 2023, after Bernstein highlighted Intismeran (its personalized cancer therapy developed with Merck) as the clearest validation yet of Moderna’s mRNA platform beyond vaccines. Bernstein reiterated a Market Perform rating.
    • Precigen (PGEN) gapped up Friday, opening at $8.08 after a $7.70 close, and hit over five-year highs before edging marginally lower. B. Riley Securities initiated coverage with a Buy rating and $12.00 price target — about 55.8% upside from the Sept 24 close — citing early commercial traction for Papzimeos, the first FDA-approved treatment for adults with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), plus the AdenoVerse and UltraCAR-T platforms. The FDA approval of Papzimeos required no confirmatory trial, and B. Riley said its launch is progressing faster than several recent rare-oncology launches.

    Why it matters

This is the market pricing in two de-risking stories. Moderna’s personalized cancer vaccines are moving from proof-of-concept toward a franchise — Intismeran’s Phase 3 melanoma study met both main goals at an interim analysis. Precigen is transitioning into a commercial-stage company on its first FDA-approved product, with analysts now underwriting a launch rather than a pipeline.

For everyday investors: analyst initiations on newly commercial biotechs can move prices fast. An initiation Buy with a launch thesis counts — but this is high-risk territory, and both hinge on execution data, not earnings.

    What to watch

    • Moderna presents Phase 3 melanoma data at the ESMO Congress in October — the next data catalyst. Intismeran is also being tested across several other cancers.
    • Precigen’s Papzimeos commercial ramp quarter by quarter. Some firms (e.g., Weiss Ratings) still carry a sell rating, and the consensus ~$13.67 target implies the easy re-rating may be partly priced.
