What happened
MongoDB (MDB) announced Monday, September 28, 2026, that Chirantan “CJ” Desai has stepped down as president and CEO, effective immediately, to join Meta Platforms as chief enterprise platform officer. MongoDB shares tumbled as much as 24% to $313.40 in early trading after closing Friday down 2.6%; Reuters earlier reported a 14% premarket drop. Meta shares fell 4% to $721.65.
Desai had held the top job for less than a year, taking over in November 2025. MongoDB’s board appointed former CEO Dev Ittycheria — who led the company from 2014 to 2025, growing annual revenue from roughly $35 million to more than $2.3 billion — as interim president and CEO, and retained an executive search firm to find a permanent successor. The company reaffirmed its Q3 and full-year fiscal 2027 guidance issued September 1, 2026.

- Fiscal Q2 revenue (ended July 31): $771.77 million, +31% YoY; EPS $1.90, +90% YoY
- Investor day scheduled for Tuesday — now under interim leadership
Why it matters
CEO departures in the middle of an AI-driven growth cycle are rarely brushed off — MongoDB’s revenue is growing 30%+ on AI workloads, and the market is pricing execution risk, not business weakness. Guggenheim’s Howard Ma called it “a real shocker,” while noting the selloff could be “an attractive entry” given Ittycheria’s track record. Meta hiring a chief enterprise platform officer signals its own enterprise-software ambitions are escalating.
What to watch
Tuesday’s investor day is the immediate test: whether interim management can defend long-term targets and give a timeline for a permanent CEO. Watch META for how it frames the new enterprise-platform role, and any analyst target changes on MDB this week.

What’s your take — is a 24% drop an overreaction with Ittycheria back in charge, or does the leadership vacuum justify it?
