What happened
Elon Musk gave Nvidia its clearest Blackwell demand signal yet late Thursday, posting on X that xAI’s Memphis data-center complex, “Colossus,” now houses roughly 780,000 Nvidia AI chips across the Hopper and Blackwell generations. The real news was inside Colossus 2: the facility currently runs 110,000 GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300 chips, and Musk said another 220,000 GB300 processors could be live as early as next week, with a further 220,000 expected in November and yet another 220,000 possible by late December “if we get lucky.” If all three tranches land, the Colossus 1 and 2 facilities could hold as many as 1.44 million Nvidia chips before year-end — far above the one-million-GPU target Musk previously outlined. Musk has also said xAI will exclusively use Nvidia AI chips. Separately, SpaceX’s offering prospectus disclosed an agreement with Anthropic covering access to about 325,000 Nvidia GPUs across Colossus and Colossus 2, with payments of $1.25 billion a month after the initial ramp period — a window into how Musk plans to monetize the compute.
Why it matters
Data-center construction has to keep pace with Nvidia’s chip sales or the hardware piles up unsold, and Musk’s breakneck expansion is the strongest single confirmation that hyperscale demand is still accelerating. It also contrasts sharply with Oracle, which just sent a force-majeure-style notice on its New Mexico “Stargate” data center project. Nvidia shares nevertheless slipped about 0.4% to $223.61 in early Friday trading, holding above the 21-day moving average — investors appear more focused on the 5.21% 10-year yield than on AI demand headlines right now.
What to watch
Whether next week’s 220,000 GB300 tranche actually comes online on schedule; any update on the December batch; and Nvidia’s commentary on Blackwell shipments when it next reports. Related reading: our earlier piece on Nvidia shifting TSMC capacity from China H200 chips to Vera Rubin.
Question for readers: Does Musk’s build-out change how you think about Nvidia’s Blackwell cycle — are we still early?
