IonQ will install its newest trapped-ion quantum computer at NVIDIA’s Boston research hub — the first quantum system to sit on site at NVIDIA’s Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC), the companies announced this week.

The system is IonQ’s Superion 256, launched in September 2026 as its sixth-generation quantum computer. It is the first system built around a fully integrated 256-qubit quantum processing unit fabricated by SkyWater, the chipmaker IonQ acquired for $1.8 billion in January. Installation is slated for 2027.

Once deployed, the Superion 256 will be linked directly to an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 accelerated-computing system through NVQLink, NVIDIA’s technology for tightly coupling quantum processors with GPU infrastructure. Hybrid workloads will be orchestrated through CUDA-Q, NVIDIA’s open-source quantum development platform. The joint research program will target hybrid quantum-classical software, large-scale system prototyping, portfolio optimization and risk modeling in finance, materials science, and computational chemistry for drug discovery.

“Every supercomputer will become a quantum supercomputer,” said Timothy Costa, NVIDIA’s vice president and general manager for quantum. IonQ chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi said the deployment “will lead to developments allowing our partners to benefit from our scalable architecture and robust manufacturability.” NVIDIA opened NVAQC last year as a dedicated lab for integrating quantum hardware with AI supercomputers; work there spans qubit noise, error correction, and hybrid algorithms.

The timing is notable: IonQ shares jumped about 12.5% on September 23 after the company unveiled the quantum industry’s first end-to-end real-time error decoder, with the NVAQC announcement arriving the same day. Quantum stocks have been volatile this year as investors weigh long timelines against genuine technical progress.

Why it matters for investors: this is NVIDIA explicitly positioning itself as the platform layer for quantum-GPU hybrid computing, not just a chip supplier. For IonQ, a deployment inside NVIDIA’s own research center is a powerful credibility stamp for its trapped-ion manufacturing roadmap — though it’s worth noting no financial terms were disclosed.

What to watch: the 2027 installation itself, any benchmark results from the NVQLink-linked system, and whether other quantum hardware vendors follow with their own NVAQC placements.

Do you think quantum-GPU hybrid computing is a real 2030s growth driver for Nvidia, or is this still science-fair territory?
