Oil Inventories Unexpectedly Rise 922K Barrels, Gasoline and Distillates Fall

U.S. crude stockpiles rose when analysts expected a draw — a rare bearish data point in a market otherwise priced for war-driven tightness.

    What happened

The Energy Information Administration reported Wednesday that U.S. crude inventories rose by 922,000 barrels to 427.3 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 25, versus a Reuters poll expectation of a 264,000-barrel draw. Gasoline and distillate inventories fell. The data landed while Brent traded around $103 and WTI near $90, both propped up by Middle East risk: a tanker struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, Houthi pressure on Bab al-Mandeb, and no Iran sanctions relief after President Trump rejected Tehran’s latest proposal.

    Why it matters

The surprise build suggests U.S. demand or export flows are softer than the physical market’s panic pricing implies — a counterweight to the geopolitical premium keeping oil elevated. Note the split signal: crude building while gasoline and distillates draw points to refinery dynamics and product-market tightness rather than a broad demand collapse. It also arrives as Saudi exports rebounded to 5.8 million barrels a day in September, the highest since February, and Hormuz flows recovered to roughly 77% of pre-war levels — physical supply is healing even as headline prices stay high.

    What to watch

OPEC+ meets Sunday, Oct. 4, with delegates signaling November quotas will likely roll over unchanged. Next: whether the Iran diplomatic track stalls further (Capital Economics now sees upside risk to its $100 year-end Brent forecast), weekly product-inventory trends, and Friday’s September payrolls report for a demand read.

With inventories building even as war-risk premium keeps oil elevated, is today’s crude price driven more by geopolitics than by actual supply and demand?
