    What happened

Qualcomm locked in one of its most valuable revenue streams on Thursday, announcing before the market open that it has renewed its global patent licensing agreement with Apple. The new deal takes effect April 1, exactly when the prior agreement was set to expire. The company gave no specifics on the length of the extension — the 2019 agreement ran six years with a two-year option to extend, so the lack of detail gives analysts some pause. Bernstein’s Stacy Rasgon, who rates Qualcomm neutral with a $165 price target, estimates the Apple licensing stream at roughly $7.50 per iPhone sold, translating to $1.5 billion to $1.7 billion in annual revenue and $1.25 to $1.50 in earnings per share. Qualcomm shares fell 1.5% to $194.26 on Thursday, underperforming as the broader chip sector retreated on the back of U.S.-China trade talks in Washington: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index slipped 0.3%, Arm plunged 7.9% to $306.34, and Tower Semiconductor slid 5.7% to $217.28.

    Why it matters

Licensing is Qualcomm’s high-margin profit engine, and the renewal secures the iPhone royalty stream at a time when Apple is steadily pushing toward its own custom modem silicon. A long extension would give Qualcomm years of dependable cash flow to reinvest in AI edge chips, automotive, and IoT — the growth businesses it needs to offset an eventually smaller Apple modem slot.

    What to watch

Any disclosure of the agreement’s length in Qualcomm’s next filings; Apple’s modem transition timeline; and how Qualcomm guides for the Apple business in its coming quarter. Related reading: Apple nears a buy point as Evercore raises its target to $380 on the iPhone 18 survey.

Question for readers: Would you rather own Qualcomm for its licensing cash flow or its chip business — which matters more now?
