    What happened

The Reserve Bank of Australia meets Tuesday (September 29) and is widely expected to raise its cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60% — the fourth hike of 2026 and the highest official rate since 2011.

The call is nearly unanimous. All four major Australian banks — NAB, CBA, Westpac, and ANZ — forecast the quarter-point move, and ASX futures implied roughly 90% probability of a hike. A Finder panel of economists agreed, with 37 of 41 predicting a rise.

The catalyst is stubborn inflation. Australia’s August CPI, released Wednesday, is expected to accelerate to 4.1% year-over-year from 3.5% in July, driven by higher diesel and food prices. Core inflation has refused to cool, holding at 3.6% — well above the RBA’s target band. ING economists note the economy is “running hot across multiple fronts,” with a tight labor market and GDP growth that surprised to the upside.

    Key figures

    – Cash rate: 4.35% → expected 4.60% on Tuesday (Sept 29), 2:30pm AEST
    – August CPI (Wednesday): expected 4.1% YoY vs 3.5% in July
    – Core inflation: 3.6% YoY, stuck above target
    – Market odds: ~90% priced in via ASX 30-day futures
    – Mortgage impact: +$91/month on a $600,000 loan per hike (Canstar)
    – ANZ warns of a second November hike to 4.85% — the highest since the 2008 financial crisis

    Why it matters

Australia joins a growing list of central banks tightening while the Fed weighs its own October hike. Rates staying “higher for longer” across major economies keeps pressure on global bond yields — the 10-year Treasury is already above 5% — and tightens financial conditions for every asset class.

For US investors, the RBA’s posture is a useful real-time read on how sticky inflation is proving outside the US, particularly with energy prices feeding back into consumer prices. ING argues a hawkish RBA should also support the Australian dollar, which has been under pressure from the risk-off environment.

    What to watch

The decision lands Tuesday, but the messaging matters more than the move itself — watch for any signal of a November follow-up. Wednesday’s CPI is the real data test: a print above 4.1% would cement the case for back-to-back hikes. Also watch Australian bank shares and mortgage lenders, which have already started repricing fixed rates ahead of the decision.

Do you think Australia’s tightening cycle has further to run, or will Tuesday mark the top?
