What happened
Robinhood unveiled a sweeping active-trader push Tuesday at its HOOD Summit in Houston, headlined by crypto perpetual futures for eligible US customers. The contracts will be offered through Robinhood Derivatives and Bitstamp, the crypto exchange Robinhood acquired in 2025 for about $200 million.
Eight assets are supported at launch: Bitcoin and Ether get up to 10x leverage, while Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, Cardano, Chainlink, and HYPE get up to 3x. Perpetuals have no expiry, and CEO Vlad Tenev said P&L settles every 15 minutes.
Key details:
- Promotional fee of just 0.01% per trade through the end of 2026
- Robinhood Derivatives is a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant and NFA member, so the product sits inside a compliant framework — notable since US retail has historically been locked out of crypto perps for regulatory reasons
- HOOD closed at $116.21
Why it matters
US retail finally gets regulated access to perps — the leveraged, no-expiry contracts that dominate offshore crypto derivatives volume. The 0.01% fee promo is clearly designed to pull volume from competitors.
This is a broker arms race: Schwab, Fidelity, and Interactive Brokers have been expanding active-trader products, and both NYSE and Nasdaq have filed to expand trading hours. It echoes X launching in-timeline stock and crypto trading and the CFTC greenlighting tokenized assets for on-chain recordkeeping — the lines between brokers, exchanges, and social platforms keep blurring.
What to watch
Rollout timing (“coming months”); whether Robinhood adjusts leverage limits over time; regulatory reception; whether perps volume migrates from offshore venues to US-compliant ones; the read-through to HOOD earnings.
Beyond perps, Robinhood also announced AI Agents — in-app agents where users pick OpenAI or Anthropic models, linked to a separate trading account. Agents can analyze markets, build watchlists, and trade stocks, options, and crypto, with every trade needing customer approval by default and no margin use at launch.
A “Loops” feature allows standing instructions, and over 150,000 agent accounts have been created since the infrastructure opened to external AI agents earlier this year. Also on deck: weekend trading for select US stocks and ETFs via Bruce ATS, extended options hours, more intraday margin, and earnings binary contracts via Cboe for trading whether a company beats metrics like revenue or EPS.
