    What happened

Russia struck the Kyiv headquarters of Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile network operator, on Sunday morning, the company told Interfax Ukraine. No casualties were reported at the site. Separately, Russia’s defence ministry said it hit a data centre belonging to Vodafone Ukraine, the country’s second-largest mobile provider.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said a Kyiv data centre was struck twice on Sunday morning, wounding two children and an adult. Moscow has been systematically targeting Ukrainian data centres and internet providers over the past week; Ukraine’s digital ministry says those attacks have knocked out service for roughly 100,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia is targeting data centres to disrupt the flow of information, including missile and drone alerts — the warnings civilians rely on during air raids.

    Why it matters

This is a notable escalation in target selection: Russia is now going directly after the telecom and data infrastructure of Ukraine’s two largest mobile carriers, not just energy assets. That widens the war’s economic footprint — prolonged outages hit commerce, banking connectivity, and the logistics networks that keep supply chains moving.

For markets, it is a reminder that the conflict’s disruption risk is not confined to energy and commodities; digital infrastructure is now in the crosshairs. It also raises the stakes for any ceasefire talks, since infrastructure attacks harden political positions on both sides.

    Key figures

    • ~100,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region without service after the past week’s strikes
    • 2 strikes on a Kyiv data centre on Sunday morning
    • 3 people wounded in the Kyiv data-centre strike — two children and an adult
    • 2 carriers — Kyivstar and Vodafone Ukraine — hit directly in one day

    What to watch

    • Whether the data-centre campaign broadens to more regions or carriers in the coming week
    • Ukrainian repair timelines and whether outages spread beyond the Kyiv region
    • Any retaliatory strikes on Russian infrastructure and how that affects energy prices
    • Diplomatic signals: Zelenskiy’s next statements and any movement in stalled talks
