What happened
Russia has declared that arms factories in Europe producing weapons for Ukraine are legitimate and potential military targets, according to a Reuters report from Wednesday. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova issued the warning at a press briefing, in response to a question about Poland’s apparent readiness to host a factory producing Patriot interceptor missiles for Ukraine.
“Weapons factories in European countries that produce arms for Ukraine are potential military targets for Russia, and one should not assume that military factories outside Ukrainian territory which produce weapons for the Kyiv regime will be safe. Anyone who thinks so is mistaken,” Zakharova said. She argued that European countries are “directly involved” in the conflict through military support, not merely providing aid.
Key details
* Statement issued September 30 at a Russian Foreign Ministry press briefing
* Prompted by Poland’s reported plans to host a Patriot interceptor-missile factory
* Zakharova: European arms production “only delays a resolution” of the warWhy it matters
This is an escalation in Russian rhetoric aimed at European industry rather than the battlefield. Threatening defense manufacturers on NATO soil — even short of a direct kinetic pledge — raises the risk premium around the war’s economic footprint and puts European defense names such as Rheinmetall, BAE Systems, Thales and Leonardo in the spotlight. It also sharpens the stakes for Poland’s Patriot production plans and for NATO’s efforts to keep arming Ukraine after the overnight air campaign that struck Ukrainian power plants with nearly 190 drones and ballistic missiles early Wednesday.

What to watch
* Whether Moscow follows the words with concrete action or keeps this as pressure rhetoric
* Poland’s response on the Patriot factory plans
* The EU and NATO reaction — this lands just after NATO’s written rebuttal of Russia’s Kaliningrad nuclear warning
* Any defense-sector market reaction to the threatDo you think this warning will force European defense companies to reassess risk — or is it just more Kremlin signaling?
