Solana is pushing ahead with its biggest protocol upgrade in years while reshaping the Foundation’s leadership for institutional finance. According to CoinDesk reporting on September 26, the Alpenglow upgrade — which aims to cut transaction finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds — is now live on both Solana’s devnet and testnet, after developer firm Anza activated it on devnet on September 25, a day after the testnet transition completed.

What happened: Alpenglow changes how Solana validators reach agreement, enabling direct vote exchanges. One practical consequence: validator votes will no longer be included in blocks, so reported transaction counts will drop even if real user activity is unchanged — the Foundation has already advised data providers to adapt their counting methods. No firm mainnet launch date has been announced, though Anza’s software schedule tentatively allows feature activations to resume on September 28. In parallel, the Solana Foundation appointed former Binance global CMO Rachel Conlan as chief strategy officer and former Polygon Labs executive Jamal Raees as general manager of payments, with a mandate to accelerate institutional adoption and payment activity.

Why it matters: A 150-millisecond finality window would put Solana’s settlement speed in the same league as traditional card networks — a meaningful talking point for the institutional and payments push the Foundation is building. Faster settlement reduces the lag for exchanges releasing deposited funds and for merchants confirming payments. The Foundation points to more than $5 trillion in stablecoin volume processed in 2026, over $4.5 billion in real-world assets on the network, and tokenized equity supply above $620 million (company-reported figures). The leadership hires show the Foundation is staffing up to convert that on-chain activity into real financial-institution partnerships, competing directly with Ethereum’s layer-2 ecosystem for tokenized finance.

What to watch: Whether Alpenglow moves to mainnet after the September 28 activation window, and how smoothly validators handle the transition. Watch for the first institutional partnership announcements from the Conlan-led team, and any change in Solana’s DeFi and payments metrics as the payments strategy takes shape.
