An Iranian commercial vessel was struck near the Strait of Hormuz early Sunday, killing 1 crew member and injuring at least three others, in the second attack on merchant shipping in the region in a week.

    What happened

Iranian state media, citing IRNA and Qeshm governor Hossein Amir Teymoori, reported the strike occurred off Qeshm Island — near Hengam Island and the Shib Deraz coast — at about 05:00 local time on Sunday. A fire broke out aboard the vessel and local authorities evacuated the crew.

The governor blamed a “terrorist enemy,” but neither the projectile type nor those responsible has been identified. Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations monitor issued Warning 134-26, reporting that a vessel was hit by an unknown projectile while transiting the strait late Saturday (around 23:00 UTC), caught fire, and had its crew evacuated. One maritime security firm identified that vessel as a Panama-flagged tanker. It remains unclear whether the two reports describe the same ship.

    • 1 crew member killed, at least 3 injured
    • Strike at ~05:00 local Sunday; UKMTO warning at ~23:00 UTC Saturday
    • 2nd merchant vessel hit in the region in a week, after the Hercules Star attack off Dubai
    • Roughly a fifth of global oil and gas flows transit the strait
    • US military redirected 100 commercial vessels over the past 60 days under its blockade
    • Brent recently around $104, WTI near $98

    Why it matters

An escalation at the world’s most important oil chokepoint lands squarely on energy markets just as diplomacy visibly stalls. With the strait effectively closed since February, traders already price a hefty disruption premium into crude — and a second vessel strike in a week keeps that premium elevated rather than fading.

The next pressure point is tanker insurance: war-risk premiums for Gulf transits could spike again, compounding costs for refiners and importers. Energy stocks and crude-linked ETFs typically react first, with Brent near $104 and WTI near $98 as the live scoreboard for how seriously markets take the risk.

    What to watch

Whether the US military acknowledges any role in the strike. Iran’s next move once mediators convey the “definitive” US position — President Donald Trump publicly rejected Tehran’s latest proposal to reopen the waterway within seven days, calling it unacceptable. Further UKMTO warnings, oil futures when markets reopen, and any retaliatory moves will set the tone for the week ahead.

How should markets price the risk of a prolonged Hormuz disruption — is the current oil risk premium enough, or are energy stocks still underpricing escalation?
